UN experts decry surge in sexual violence in conflict zones, urge action
May 14, 2025 (GENEVA) – United Nations-appointed independent human rights experts on Wednesday voiced alarm over a significant increase in sexual violence, including rape and sexual slavery, targeting women and girls in conflict zones. They highlighted a severe breakdown of protection systems, leaving vulnerable populations at heightened risk.
The experts reported that women and girls are increasingly being subjected to “rape, sexual slavery, and other forms of sexual violence” in conflict-affected areas. Displacement to insecure camps and shelters has worsened their vulnerability, they added.
“Conditions in these areas have worsened drastically, exposing women and girls to increased sexual violence,” the experts stated.
Further concern was expressed over continued attacks on women human rights defenders and frontline workers. These individuals have reportedly been raped, killed, or harassed for their efforts in assisting survivors or documenting abuses.
“These violations cause profound harm to individuals and communities, while steadily dismantling remaining protections and undermining prospects for recovery and justice,” the experts said.
They described the escalating violence as an “alarming testament to the erosion of protections for women and girls during times of conflict and normalisation of such violence.”
The experts issued an urgent call for international intervention. “The international community must urgently step in to stem the tide,” they urged.
The statement confirmed that the experts have communicated with the relevant government authorities regarding these matters.
