Northern state receives thousands displaced by North Darfur fighting
May 23, 2025 (DONGOLA) – Officials in Sudan’s Northern State said on Friday that the far northern state has received approximately 8,000 people displaced from North Darfur, where fighting continues between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
A government official in Northern State told Sudan Tribune that the state has taken in over 1,000 displaced families from North Darfur, in addition to hundreds of families from Salha and Al-Jummoia, south of Omdurman in Khartoum State, following fierce battles in those areas.
According to the official, 470 displaced families from Al-Malha and 568 families from the Zamzam displacement camp and Tawila in North Darfur have arrived in Northern State. Additionally, 544 displaced families from Salha and Al-Jummoia, south of Omdurman in Khartoum State, reached the city of Al-Debba and the areas of Gushabi and Al-Tadamoun within Al-Debba locality in Northern State.
Kawthar Geili, coordinator for the Humanitarian Aid Commission in Al-Debba locality, stated in a press release that displacement waves are steadily increasing, with new waves anticipated. She estimated the daily displacement rate at about 15 to 20 families.
The Humanitarian Aid Commission in Northern State, along with organizations and partners, issued an urgent appeal to address the situation of the displaced from Al-Malha, Zamzam, and Al-Jummoia, who are fleeing war and forced displacement. The commission reiterated its call to all national and international organizations, donors, humanitarian supporters, and the community to assist the newly displaced individuals fleeing parts of Darfur, Kordofan, and Khartoum states.
Kawthar explained that the number of arrivals from the Zamzam area totaled 1,496 families, equivalent to 7,488 individuals, and 370 families, or 1,850 individuals, from Al-Malha, in addition to those arriving from Al-Jummoia in Khartoum State.
Kawthar expressed her appreciation for the World Food Programme (WFP), noting that it has provided food aid to 4,500 displaced individuals. She commended the efforts of the state and local governments, organizations, and supporters.
Kawthar also warned of some cholera cases among the displaced, confirming that the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization are containing the cases and adding that the situation is under control.
