July 26, 2025 (TAWILA) – A cholera outbreak in the Tawila area of Sudan’s North Darfur region has killed 26 people and infected more than 1,400, an aid agency said, as thousands of people fleeing conflict crowd into displacement camps.

The General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugee Camps said on Friday that the cumulative number of cases had reached 1,430. Another 220 people are in medical isolation, with a daily infection rate of 45 to 90 cases, according to spokesperson Adam Regal.

“The… rise in daily cholera cases in Tawila threatens the lives of the displaced in the camps,” Regal said in a statement, adding that most cases were concentrated in the Daba Naira and Tawila Umda camps.

Tens of thousands of people have fled to Tawila, located about 60 km (37 miles) west of the state capital El Fasher, since fighting escalated there in May between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

United Nations agencies have previously warned that the rainy season could exacerbate the spread of cholera in the conflict-ridden Darfur and Kordofan regions.
