Sudan to reopen Khartoum airport in October after conflict repairs

August 13, 2025 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan will reopen Khartoum International Airport in October after completing repairs to facilities heavily damaged during the country’s conflict, a top army official announced on Wednesday.

The move is planned to coincide with the return of government institutions to the capital from their temporary base in Port Sudan, which was established after the fighting began.

“Work on the maintenance of the runway, terminals, and electricity, water and sanitation services at Khartoum Airport is complete,” Assistant Commander-in-Chief Ibrahim Jaber said in a statement released by the Sovereign Council.

The airport and other key infrastructure in the capital suffered significant destruction during the period when the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) controlled large parts of the city. The army regained control of the capital in March and expanded its reach across Khartoum state in May.

The director of the Sudanese Airports Company, Sir Al-Khatim Babiker, stated that 85% of the airport’s infrastructure serving customers has been rehabilitated to meet international standards.

Jaber, who also chairs a committee preparing for the return of citizens to Khartoum, said the reopening would facilitate the return of Sudanese nationals, the reception of official delegations, and the resumption of domestic flights. He added that reconstruction was proceeding despite “limited resources,” as the war budget is allocated based on priorities.

The committee’s mandate also includes withdrawing military formations from the capital and rehabilitating essential services in the health, water, and education sectors.
