Sudanese group launches peace initiative to end war

September 1, 2025 (KHARTOUM) – A Sudanese advocacy group on Sunday launched a national peace initiative to end the country’s devastating war, a conflict it described as the “most dangerous juncture in Sudan’s modern history.”

The “Sudan Peace Call,” launched by the Advocacy Group for Peace in Sudan (AGPS), is a Sudanese-led effort aimed at establishing a just and sustainable peace through broad-based reconciliation.

The initiative was inspired by prominent academic and former diplomat Francis Deng, who spoke at the online launch event.

“Achieving peace can create the climate that could restore unity between the north and the south,” Deng said, urging Sudanese to take full responsibility for their nation’s future before engaging with the international community.

The initiative is based on the principle of inclusive citizenship for all Sudanese without discrimination based on religion, ethnicity, gender or region, its organizers said.

“The initiative is open to all Sudanese and rejects exclusion,” said AGPS member Essam El-Din Abbas. “It is a call for reconciliation among local communities that extends to the political elites.”

Fellow member Abdullah Al-Na’im described peace as both a means and an end. “Stopping war and violence is a priority… but it is also a means to establish full and inclusive citizenship,” he said.

The group said the plan was developed following consultative meetings in July with thinkers, civil leaders and activists to create a credible alternative to failed peace efforts.
