Sudan security committee bans public arms, illegal vehicles in Khartoum
September 6, 2025 (KHARTOUM) – A Sudanese security committee on Saturday announced a raft of new measures for the capital Khartoum, including a ban on carrying weapons in public and the use of unlicensed vehicles, and urged citizens not to engage with undocumented foreigners.
The move comes amid a rise in armed looting and murder in the city as authorities work to rebuild infrastructure and restore basic services following a period of control by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Defence Minister Hassan Daoud Kabroun, who heads the committee, said the measures were aimed at “stabilizing the security situation and re-establishing state authority.”
“We stressed the prohibition of carrying weapons and wearing military uniforms in neighbourhoods and public places,” Kabroun said in a press statement, adding that a ban on motorcycles and unlicensed cars was due to their use in most reported robberies.
Kabroun also called on citizens to avoid dealing with foreigners who lack residency documents, citing the country’s “state of war.” Authorities have recently relocated many foreigners, particularly refugees from South Sudan, to border camps after accusing some of fighting with the RSF against the national army.
The committee is also tackling the issue of abandoned vehicles and continuing a campaign to remove informal housing and shops from neighbourhoods and markets, the minister said.
The security committee was formed by Sudan’s leader, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, to create a secure environment for citizens to return to the capital.
