Khartoum state reports over 14,000 dengue cases, four deaths

September 23, 2025 (KHARTOUM) – Khartoum state’s health ministry on Tuesday said it has recorded 14,012 cases of dengue fever and four related deaths since January 2024, as residents complain of treatment shortages and overcrowded hospitals.

The announcement comes as local activists work to provide intravenous fluids to patients who are most in need.

“The cumulative number of dengue fever cases in the state has reached more than 14,000, including four deaths, a mortality rate of 0.3%,” Mohamed al-Tijani, the ministry’s director of emergencies and epidemiology, said at a press conference.

Mobile clinics and rapid response teams have been deployed to all seven localities of Khartoum, he added.

An epidemiological report from the ministry showed cases spread across the state. It stressed that 90% of elimination efforts depend on community actions, such as clearing stagnant water and old tyres where mosquitoes breed.

Officials warned against using paracetamol drips without a prescription, citing potential complications, and urged people with symptoms to seek care at the nearest health facility.

As part of the vector control plan, health teams have conducted 980 residual spraying operations and 10 aerial spraying sorties in hard-to-reach areas, said Ahmed al-Bashir, the director of curative medicine.

The ministry confirmed that free dengue fever treatment is available at the Omdurman, Al-Tamayuz, Haj Al-Safi, Al-Turki, Bashaer, and Alban Jadeed hospitals.

According to the report, the Karari locality has the highest number of infections with 7,245 cases, attributed to its high population density. Jebel Awlia recorded 1,702 cases, Omdurman 1,676, Sharq El-Nil 1,241, Bahri 1,019, and the central Khartoum locality recorded 809 cases.
