September 30, 2025 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan is battling a new hepatitis outbreak in its central Al Jazirah state and a surge of dengue fever in the capital Khartoum, the health ministry said on Tuesday, compounding a nationwide health crisis.

The country is already struggling with outbreaks of cholera and malaria amid a severe shortage of medicine and medical staff.

The ministry’s Emergency Operations Centre said 102 cases of hepatitis were recorded in Al Jazirah state in the last week alone.

It also recorded 3,126 cases of dengue fever between Sept. 20 and 26, with 78% of the infections occurring in Khartoum.

Another 641 new cases of cholera were registered across 14 states, with a majority in South Kordofan, the centre’s report said.

Authorities are responding by distributing chlorine for water purification and launching vector control campaigns, including spraying and distributing mosquito nets in River Nile state, the ministry said.

The report noted that the outbreaks have directly impacted at least 1,876 people across 15 localities in the states of Al Jazirah, Northern, and White Nile.
