Sudan security cell arrests teacher over salary demands, spokesman says
October 14, 2025 (KASSALA) – A security cell in eastern Sudan’s Kassala State arrested a teacher, Tariq Mirghani, after he demanded that authorities pay outstanding salaries, a spokesman for the Sudanese Teachers’ Committee said on Tuesday.
The arrest is part of a rising number of detentions targeting activists, teachers, doctors, and lawyers by the security cell, a joint force of the army, police, and intelligence services with broad powers of arrest and investigation in army-controlled territories.
Sami al-Baqir, the committee’s spokesman, told Sudan Tribune that “the security cell in Kassala State arrested teacher Tariq Mirghani from his home on October 8 because of teachers’ demands for their salaries.”
He noted that Mirghani’s detention brings the number of teachers in army custody to three. Separately, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are holding seven teachers, and two others have been missing since the war began.
Al-Baqir called the arrests a “flagrant violation of human rights,” highlighting that they often result from demands for basic rights, which “indicates a terrible deterioration in human rights and the failure of state institutions to perform their duties.”
“The Sudanese Teachers’ Committee will continue to expose these violations against teachers, and it is working with others to document these crimes and report them to the competent authorities,” he added, urging all concerned parties to condemn the practice and work to stop it immediately.
The spokesman said the committee is collaborating with union partners to end the war, which he described as the primary cause of the violations. He accused affiliates of the former regime within state institutions of exploiting the conflict to settle political scores.
Since the conflict erupted on April 15, 2023, Sudan has experienced a severe deterioration in human rights. Both sides of the conflict have committed widespread violations, including arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, killings, and sexual violence.
