Sudan reports 138 hepatitis cases, one death in Gezira state
October 15, 2025 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan recorded 138 cases of viral hepatitis and one related death in Al Jazirah state in a single week, the health ministry said on Wednesday, as the country struggles with multiple disease outbreaks.
The new cases, logged between Oct. 4 and 10, come amid a nationwide health crisis marked by severe shortages of medicine and medical staff.
Sudan is battling several epidemics, including cholera, dengue fever, and malaria, according to a report from the Federal Emergency Operations Centre.
While the report said interventions had lowered the incidence of cholera and dengue, it noted a rise in malaria, with 50,000 confirmed cases across the country.
Dengue fever has infected 3,473 people and caused 29 deaths in eight states. Cholera cases stood at 611 across 15 states, mainly concentrated in the Kordofan and Darfur regions.
The centre also said that conditions related to the autumn rainy season had affected several states this week, a factor that can exacerbate the spread of waterborne diseases.
