Sudan cabinet meets in Khartoum for first time since war began
January 25, 2026 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan’s cabinet held its first meeting in the capital Khartoum on Sunday since the government returned from Port Sudan, Information and Culture Minister Khalid Aleisir said.
The government had operated from Port Sudan on the Red Sea coast for about 30 months after war broke out in April 2023, having fled Khartoum when conflict erupted between the army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
Aleisir said the meeting marked the practical resumption of executive activities from the capital. While all federal ministries have returned to Khartoum, the foreign and finance ministries will maintain small coordination offices in Port Sudan, he said.
Prime Minister Kamil Idris chaired the session, which included the full 22-member cabinet. Attendees included General Intelligence Service Director Ahmed Ibrahim Mufaddal, Khartoum Governor Ahmed Osman Hamza and Darfur Governor Minni Arko Minawi.
The cabinet, meeting at the Khartoum state government secretariat, discussed reviewing levies and combating drugs and smuggling, Aleisir said. Ministers also reviewed the prime minister’s vision for major national projects and the national digital identity file.
