Sudan military intelligence arrests teacher in El Obeid over anti-war posts
January 31, 2026 (EL OBEID) – Military intelligence in the capital of North Kordofan state, El Obeid, arrested an English teacher four days ago over Facebook posts calling for an end to the country’s war, the Sudanese Teachers’ Committee said on Saturday.
Ali Hassan, who works at Al-Wafaa Secondary School for Girls, was detained from his home and taken to an unknown location without charges being filed, committee spokesperson Sami al-Baqir said.
“Military intelligence in El Obeid arrested teacher Ali Hassan for publishing posts on his Facebook account calling for the cessation of the war,” al-Baqir told Sudan Tribune.
Authorities had not notified Hassan’s family or the committee of his place of detention, raising concerns about his safety, he said.
The committee called the arrest arbitrary and a violation of teachers’ rights, holding security authorities responsible for Hassan’s safety and demanding his immediate release.
Teachers have faced increasing detentions and summons from security agencies for union activities or opinions on the conflict and living conditions, the committee said.
Such practices have contributed to the collapse of the educational process amid suspended studies and economic pressures, it added.
Security authorities have continued to pursue political figures, activists and human rights defenders who advocate for an end to the conflict, with some facing charges carrying penalties including long-term imprisonment or death, and others dying in custody, according to the committee.
