Fire kills four in Central Darfur displacement camp

April 27, 2026 (GOLO) – At least four people, including children, were killed and 12 others injured on Monday when a massive fire swept through a displacement camp in Sudan’s Darfur region.

The civil authority in areas controlled by the Sudan Liberation Movement, led by Abdul Wahid el-Nur, confirmed the casualties in a statement. The blaze destroyed large sections of a camp in the Golo area of Central Darfur state.

The fire completely razed three blocks within the camp and partially damaged several neighbouring housing units. The civil authority issued an urgent appeal to international and local aid organizations to provide emergency medical teams and health supplies for the injured.

This tragic incident is the latest in a series of fires to hit displacement camps across the region in recent months. High temperatures, severe overcrowding, and the use of highly flammable building materials often contribute to the rapid spread of such blazes.

The disaster further complicates the humanitarian crisis in Darfur. Hundreds of thousands of displaced people live in makeshift huts under precarious conditions, facing rising violence and a persistent lack of humanitarian support.
