June 13, 2026 (GEISSAN) – The Sudanese army on Saturday repelled a fierce attack by an alliance of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) led by Abdel Aziz al-Hilu, marking the fourth such assault in less than a month targeting a strategic town in the Blue Nile region.

The joint forces targeted the strategic town of Amouri, located near Geissan. The RSF and its ally launched a large-scale military operation in the southeastern Blue Nile region last March, which previously enabled them to seize control of Kurmuk and its surrounding areas.

The army’s 4th Infantry Division command in the Blue Nile region said in a statement that the 13th Infantry Brigade in Kuri successfully thwarted the attack by what it described as the “terrorist militia” and forces led by rebel commander Joseph Touka, forcing them to retreat under heavy fire.

The military command added that its forces inflicted heavy casualties and caused significant losses of equipment on the attackers, destroying several combat vehicles.

According to the statement, the army also seized a number of military vehicles, weapons, and ammunition left behind by the retreating forces.

The division emphasized that this victory is part of ongoing operations by the armed forces to secure the eastern sector, defeat rebel groups, and maintain stability for local citizens.

Military sources told Sudan Tribune that the assault on Amouri, located in the eastern part of the Blue Nile region, is the fourth of its kind in less than a month. They noted that the RSF-led alliance is attempting to capture the town to advance closer to the strategic locality of Geissan.

The same sources confirmed that the army has deployed unprecedented reinforcements to the Amouri area to block any further advances by the RSF and its allies toward Geissan.
