Sudan central bank resumes deposit guarantee fund operations in Khartoum
July 11, 2026 (KHARTOUM) – The Central Bank of Sudan on Saturday said the country’s deposit insurance fund has resumed operations from its headquarters in Khartoum after a years-long suspension caused by the war.
The reopening of the Bank Deposit Guarantee Fund in the capital’s Al-Amart neighbourhood is part of a central bank push to restore key financial institutions to Khartoum following the rehabilitation of their offices.
Central Bank Governor Amna Mirghani Hassan Al-Tom said the return of the fund is intended to stabilize the financial sector, protect customer deposits, and rebuild confidence in the banking system following severe wartime disruptions.
The fund functions alongside the central bank as a core component of Sudan’s financial safety net, working to mitigate the risk of bank failures and prevent panic from spreading through the banking system.
Al-Tom said that an upcoming amendment to the Fund Act of 2026 will grant the institution greater independence and expanded regulatory powers. The draft law will allow the fund to assist distressed banks, manage financial crises, and share data with other regulatory bodies.
The planned legal amendments are currently being finalized by the fund’s board of directors in coordination with the Sovereign Council and the Cabinet.
Fund Director-General Abdel Rahman Al-Mahdi Zakaria said the return to the capital will enable the institution to advance strategic reforms, including restructuring banks, improving governance, and upgrading risk management to meet international standards.
