Arab League and Sudan plan reconstruction with focus on smart transport
July 27, 2026 (KHARTOUM) – The Arab League announced on Monday preparations to develop a broad reconstruction plan for Sudan, alongside the establishment of regional partnerships aimed at rehabilitating the country’s transport sector and driving economic recovery.
The ongoing war has inflicted severe damage on Sudan’s critical infrastructure, devastating land, maritime, and air networks, which has heavily disrupted civilian mobility and the delivery of vital humanitarian assistance.
Mohammed Ahmed al-Ni, Secretary-General of the Council of Arab Economic Unity, stated during a high-level assembly in Khartoum that the pan-Arab organization is formulating a structured strategy for rebuilding the country, emphasizing that smart transportation systems will form a core pillar of the initiative.
Al-Ni noted that the broader Arab recovery framework is built upon three fundamental tracks: humanitarian aid, economic stabilization, and long-term infrastructure reconstruction.
The announcement coincided with the opening of the three-day Sudanese-Arab Smart Transport Forum in Khartoum, convened under the theme “Towards a Smart and Sustainable Partnership to Rebuild the Transport Sector,” which brought together joint Arab action institutions, government bodies, and private-sector leaders.
Coordination is currently underway between the Arab League and specialized regional unions to facilitate the involvement of major Arab corporations in direct reconstruction projects, according to al-Ni, who highlighted a prior Cairo initiative focused on transport rehabilitation.
Al-Ni emphasized that rebuilding Sudan remains a pivotal Arab priority requiring synchronized efforts between national governments, funding institutions, private companies, and technical experts to establish long-term regional stability.
Sudan’s Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Saif al-Nasr Al-Tijani Haroun, presented a portfolio of strategic transport initiatives to potential partners and investors, urging Arab financial institutions and private enterprises to expand cooperation during the upcoming phase.
Haroun affirmed that the ministry is implementing an integrated strategic vision to modernize the national transport system, which encompasses the rehabilitation of roads, bridges, railways, seaports, river ports, and dry ports to meet international standards.
The forum aims to strengthen technical cooperation in smart transportation and logistics, showcase high-priority investment opportunities, and foster public-private partnerships to accelerate post-conflict recovery and bolster regional economic integration.
