Sudan Democratic Block discusses peace with UN envoy in Addis Ababa

JULY 31, 2026 (ADDIS ABABA) – Leaders of Sudan’s Democratic Block coalition met with Pekka Haavisto, the UN envoy for Sudan, in the Ethiopian capital on Friday to discuss ways to end the country’s civil war.

The talks, held under the framework of a five-party diplomatic mechanism, covered political developments and the deteriorating humanitarian situation, coalition leader Minni Arko Minawi said.

Minawi, who also serves as governor of Darfur, told reporters the coalition urged the international community to designate the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces as a terrorist organization and bring its leaders to justice.

He called for holding foreign supporters of the RSF accountable, accusing an unnamed nation of fueling the conflict through military and logistical aid,  a reference to the United Arab Emirates, which the Sudanese army has long accused of backing the group.

The Darfur governor warned that millions of displaced people and refugees face worsening conditions as the rainy season begins, compounded by blockades on humanitarian relief.

“The situation threatens a humanitarian catastrophe that demands urgent international action,” Minawi said.

He said lasting peace requires an inclusive dialogue inside Sudan leading to a civilian government based on justice, equal citizenship, and the rule of law.
