August 17, 2026 (JUBA) – South Sudan is ready to mediate a peaceful settlement to the conflict in neighbouring Sudan, President Salva Kiir said on Monday following talks in Juba with Darfur regional governor Minni Arko Minawi.

Kiir reiterated Juba’s willingness to engage with all warring factions and leverage diplomatic channels to promote dialogue and reach a political resolution, the South Sudanese presidency said in a statement.

“Peace in Sudan means peace in South Sudan, and peace in South Sudan also means peace in Sudan,” the presidency quoted Kiir as saying.

Juba previously brokered the October 2020 peace agreement between Khartoum and several rebel groups, including Minawi’s faction of the Sudan Liberation Movement.

Implementation of that deal has largely stalled, with signatories divided between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since war erupted in April 2023.

Minawi said a Sudanese delegation would visit Juba soon to review the 2020 peace agreement and assess outstanding issues.

Writing on social media platform X, Minawi said discussions also addressed regional stability, land issues, displaced populations, and alleged abuses by the RSF.
