Sudan central bank reviews foreign exchange interventions to stabilize currency
August 18, 2026 (KHARTOUM) – The Central Bank of Sudan is assessing the impact of its recent market interventions to boost foreign exchange liquidity and stabilize the exchange rate, the regulator said in a statement.
The assessment comes amid persistent pressure on the local currency, as authorities seek to secure funding for strategic imports and curb inflation.
The central bank met with heads of commercial lenders to review currency injections, evaluate operational challenges, and refine intervention mechanisms.
It also directed commercial banks to strictly enforce trade regulations to ensure export proceeds are repatriated through official banking channels rather than the parallel market.
The central bank stepped up oversight in June by vetting commercial bank import requests to prioritize foreign currency allocations for essential commodities and productive sectors.
The regulator reiterated its commitment to meeting foreign exchange demand for all compliant import transactions, while maintaining coordination with commercial lenders to guide future market interventions.
