October 9, 2026 (EL OBEID) — At least six civilians were injured on Friday when a swarm of explosive-laden drones struck the strategic Sudanese city of El Obeid, military sources said, blaming the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
The attack, which began around 3:30 a.m. local time, involved about 10 one-way attack drones entering the airspace sequentially, according to military sources who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Sudanese army air defences engaged the incoming aircraft, but several struck residential neighbourhoods, damaging homes and vehicles and wounding six residents, the sources said.
Residents across El Obeid reported hearing multiple loud blasts accompanied by heavy anti-aircraft fire echoing through the city.
The RSF did not immediately comment on the reported attack, and Sudan Tribune could not independently verify the casualty figures or damage reports.
El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state, is the largest city in the broader Kordofan region and houses the army’s 5th Infantry Division. It serves as a vital logistics and operational base for the military and allied groups, including the Darfur Joint Force.
In a statement, the North Kordofan state government condemned what it called the targeting of civilian areas and private homes, accusing the RSF of violating international protections for civilians.
The authorities urged residents to remain vigilant, report unexploded ordnance, and stay away from strike locations.
The war between the Sudanese army and the RSF erupted in April 2023, creating the world’s largest displacement crisis and devastating urban centres across the country.
