October 29, 2026 (MOSCOW) – Sudan’s Sovereign Council President and army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan arrived in Moscow on Thursday to lead his country’s delegation at the third Russia-Africa Summit.

The summit runs from Oct. 28 to 29 under the theme “For Peace, Security and Development” and will draw more than 20 African leaders and representatives from about 48 nations.

Moscow aims to use the gathering to expand its strategic ties and bolster its political and economic footprint across the African continent.

The effort is part of Russia’s broader push to build a multipolar international system.

Burhan is scheduled to address the summit to discuss regional issues and prospects for enhancing cooperation between Russia and African nations, the Sovereign Council said in a statement.

His delegation includes Sudan’s foreign and finance ministers, the head of the General Intelligence Service, and the director of the Defence Industries System.

The visit highlights growing ties between Khartoum and Moscow, underpinned by Russian diplomatic support for Sudan at the United Nations Security Council.

Russia vetoed a draft resolution on the Sudanese conflict in November 2024 and opposed expanding an arms embargo beyond the Darfur region.

Khartoum has welcomed Moscow’s diplomatic backing as the two sides seek to strengthen political, military, and economic cooperation.
