Four killed in tribal clash in North Darfur

March 25, 2023 (EL FASHER) – Four people were killed on Saturday, and six others were injured, following the renewed bloody clashes between two branches of the Bani Hussein tribe in the El Sereif locality of North Darfur state.

After the resignation of the former tribal leader, Mohamed Hamid al-Jedi, for health reasons, the Bani Hussein tribe split into two groups, one of which supports the new nazir, Mohamed Ismail Adam appointed by the state government, while the other group opposes his leadership of the tribe.

The two groups clashed several times, the last occurred in 2022 when 18 people were killed and more than 30 others were injured.

“Bloody confrontations broke out on Saturday morning between supporters and opponents of Nazir Mohamed Ismail. Four people were killed on the spot and six others wounded,” an activist on the region’s issues Abdel Malik Musa told Sudan Tribune.

Musa added that the reason for the renewed armed clashes between the two parties was the theft of a motorcycle belonging to Al-Nazir’s supporters, and the group opposing him was accused of stealing it.

He pointed out that the security situation is strained due to the lack of intervention of the security and military services present in the area.

He pointed out that the dispute over the chiefdom of the tribe (Nazarah) negatively impacts the life of El Sereif residents.

North Darfur governor Nimir Abdel Rahman was not reachable for comment on the tribal violence.
