BREAKING NEWS: Sudan president to be charged by ICC of war crimes – Washington Post

July 10, 2008 (WASHINGTON) – The Washington Post quoted UN officials and diplomats as saying that Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir will be charged by the International Criminal Court (ICC) with genocide and crimes against humanity.

Earlier today the ICC announced that its prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo will hold a press conference on Monday revealing his new case “on crimes committed in the whole of Darfur over the last five years”.

It is not clear how countries will react to the indictement of Al-Bashir.

The international community was actively preparing itself for the possibility that the Sudanese president Omar Hassan Al-Bashir may be named as a Darfur war crimes suspect by the ICC next week.

Western diplomats and world officials appeared nervous that Khartoum may retaliate to charges against Al-Bashir by expelling aid organizations and peacekeeping forces from Darfur.

Sudan’s U.N. ambassador Abdel-Mahmood Mohamed told reporters that “all options are on the table” if Sudan president is indeed indicted.

Mohamed is scheduled to meet with the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon tomorrow afternoon.

The UN chief refused to comment on the speculations of Al-Bashir’s indictments saying that “as a Secretary General I am not in a position to mention anything officially before the announcement by the ICC”.

“In principal I believe that peace and justice should go hand in hand. Justice can be part of a peace process but peace without justice cannot be sustainable” he added.

However Ban Ki-Moon said he will assess the situation after the suspects are named next week.

The UN mission in Sudan elevated its threats level in anticipation of the ICC announcement and the Inner City Press website reported that a visit by a key logistics official in the Darfur mission to New York fearing that Sudan “may order the UN out of Darfur”.

In his report to the UN Security Council (UNSC) last month, Ocampo made his harshest condemnation of Khartoum saying that he collected evidence of a “criminal plan based on the mobilization of the whole state apparatus, including the armed forces, the intelligence services, the diplomatic and public information bureaucracies, and the justice system”.

Ocampo said that his office is investigating who “is maintaining Haroun in a position to commit crimes; who is instructing him and others”.

The statements by Ocampo were taken to suggest that he is going after senior Sudanese officials.

But Sudan has so far refused to hand over two of its citizens charged by the ICC of war crimes last year saying the world court has no jurisdiction.

The judges of the ICC issued their first arrest warrants for suspects accused of war crimes in Sudan’s Darfur region in early May.

The warrants were issued for Ahmed Haroun, state minister for humanitarian affairs, and militia commander Ali Mohamed Ali Abdel-Rahman, also know as Ali Kushayb

Sudan has not ratified the Rome Statue, but the UN Security Council triggered the provisions under the Statue that enables it to refer situations in non-State parties to the world court if it deems that it is a threat to international peace and security.

Congratulation Mr beshir,i would judge that you should be suitable for capital punishment because billions of litres of bloodshed has been lost in Sudan because of a single man who operates cruel policy within a beautiful nation like Sudan.I adivce ICC to get rid of beshir on this glob because he keep hiding terrorist people in Sudan,in other hand he was acting aganist ICC by assaulting ICC members and calling them terrorist group.Turning his own title to ICC.

That is a good move Mr Mareno.Bashir should not be allowed to get away with all the attrocities he has been committing against the Marginalised population in Sudan. However, it is annoying whenever the ICC arrest warrants are issued and fail to be implemented due to lack of commitment of some members of the UN Security council.

What a good news it’s for the ruthless Bashir Omar to be named as war crime prosecuter? I hope the UN secretary General Hon. Ban ki Moon will double his ICC to severely charge and hang this human killer and terrorism supporter of Osam Bin Laden.
Thanks ICC and if you fell to name him then bear in mind that your continuation in Darfur will be invalid.

It is really nice to hear this but SPLM must be series, it is not a matter of saying good news. Bashir will engage much in swallowing his oponents before he is swallowed by the ICC. Why is there no reaction about Pagan’s suspension? We need to know that counting a million starts from one. So why should Bashir be given chance to begin his fake intentions which will advance tommorrow to another thing?

That is agood move because no one is above the law.If it is true that President Bashire will face the ICC, then all the criminals in the Sudan shall all be caught, invident Bashire will not have powers to protect them any more.Thank God that it came in the time of elections next year, therefore,we shall not have Bashire in the list of contesters, candidates since he is acriminal. That quotation is the laws governing the elections and he is aware pull time.
I think Sudan can be agood place without Bashire like Iraq without Saddam.God be in our side and let justice take it course.

Thank to Big Logic Boy, that he has listen to our advised. He has improved in his writing.

Only little can be said by those who know the motives of Mr.Bashir as pertaining the ICC’s decision to try him of war crimes committed not only in darfur but the whole of Sudan.Of course this is a social destiny that every one must appreciate the ICC of their concern for the war crimes committed against the innocent population.

In addition the world will never be free from terrorism if at all the international community let him get away with this. By the way I am not saying that he must be executed like some have suggested but I think he must be brought back to his senses that he left thirty five years ago in the millitary camp. However, he has make himself twice as fit for hell as Saddam Hussein.

My advice to the NCP is that they let their chairman exercise three roles.
One, to make him see a psychiatrist before anything. Two, to empower his vice chairperson to prepare for anything. lastly he need to go to Mecca to consult the Black Stone of the Holly city.

the voice of concern is in search of social redemption.

Even though this decicion comes very late,I personally believe that the ICC has been working.

21 years of innocent lives terminated in Southern Sudan,5 years in Darfur by the regime of Sudan presidents and 3/4 of such lives by Omer Bashir qualifies Omer Bashir for the ICC.

He may chase away all the International NGOs and UN/AU peace keepers out of Sudan but he has to face the ICC.

My dear Omer Bashir, everyone of us on Earth has his/her day for good or wrong.

“The wrong that you did, wrong you and the good you did,do you good”.

Your time has come and you should accept as those that you chooses their time accepted.

As the whole country awaits president Bashir to be indicted by the ICC next Monday, all I can do is fast day and night for God’s wreath to prevail. Bashir of all the people should live the rest of his life, if he choose to, in hiding or relinquish the so called Islamic Empire throne to Salva Kiir to demolished it into oblivion once and for good.

Didn’t I say God is at work in the Sudan. This is just a trail, the real movie hasn’t started yet.

For very has its time like what has came to Bashir due to his bad conducts known worldwide and each and every marginalized citicen of sudan is now joyous for Bashir position now.

He pretends that ICC & UN will never react to his terror behaviours unanimously supported by Arabs & Islamic scholars, the very people who deserted Sadam Hissen when Bush aimed to teach them lessons.

I pray his followers will suit be named into beautiful lists of terrorists of sudan and be prosecuted too.

I wish ICC & UN have to investigate also the recent information regarding Osama bin Ladin sending his troups to sudan purposely to trigger Hybrid Forces in Darfur.

Bravo ICC, your quick action to indict president Al Beshir will mean quick resolution resolution to the crisis in Darfur. President Al Beshir is the Prime suspect in all atttrocities committed agaisnt humanity in Darfur, he must be brought to justice.

Mr. Ocampo, go forward and never back, I had written on this earlier in Sudan Tribune that Beshir should have been the frist to be in the list of suspects committing crimes in Darfur. Blames were put on Janjaweed, but who aids the Janjaweeds with arms, mounted vehicles with heavy military machineries, no one but president Al Bahir.

It will be a very good lesson to sudan presidents who will be ruling sudan that commiting a crime against humanity let person face the Internation court.

The wiseman has heard and admitted your recommendation. Standard people in reasoning judge by words spoken but not the identity or origin of the person. We must have a Sudan of Justice, a Sudan of Equality, A sudan of progress and transformation. We can achieve this when Omar is checked while SPLM hardens its policies and their implementation. THE ICC WORK HAS DOUBLE STANDARDS , THE INTEGRITY OF THIS ORGANISATION IS QUESTIONABLE , THIS PROSECUTOR IS DEVIATING HIS FUNCTION TO PERSONAL ISSUES ……….ONE QUESTION???????? WHY WOULD YOU INDICT THE HEAD OF STATE WHILE YOU KEEP BLIND FOR ATROCITIES IN IRAQ AND ELSEWHERE………….YOU CAN not EVEN PROSECUTE A SINGLE US ARMY MAN ………..IS THIS FAIR ????????, THEN YOUR JUDGEMENT AND INTENTS BECOME UNDER FIRE AS TARGETING THE COUNTRY AND CONTRIBUTING TO ITS DESTABILIZATION……….

Bravo!Brave! UN if the indictment of the mr bashir is true,I have been looking for this since in the early 1990s when NIF government was harbouring the world one terrorist Osama Bin Laden who sponsor Jihad against the EX southern rebels, after pressure Osama left sudan leaving Bashir while continuing with his barbaric activities not only in the southern sudan but also in the Eastern, northern and western sudan as well in the neighbouring counries such as Eritera,Ethiopia,CAR and chad in the broad day light while international community is watching without taking an apprepriate action against him.my question was ,why do the international community turns the blind eye to these horrible situations, and where is the justice the world is talking about? and now i am satisfy that the justice of the worly is not only apply to the low ranking people but also to the high ranking people like beshir.bravo to the UN. bravo to the ICC. Long live the world justice.

dont expect something so soon folks. are we sure that this warrant and indictions are going to materialise? i dont think so. Omar may be indicted of commiting crime but what if he turn down that request of moreno since sudan is not a signatory of that court? it will still be void. anyway, it was a good try by the ICC after keeping quiet for so long. i also need these people to be included in the next week’s report: 1) ali Nafi
    2) Osman taha
