Sudan partners review progress of peace implementation
August 21, 2008 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese peace partners reviewed today progress made in the work of subcommittees formed earlier this month to resolve outstanding issues in the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement,.
Sudanese Vice-President Ali Osman Taha and Vice-President of the Government of Southern Sudan Riek Machar discussed today the progress of work of the 13 subcommittees of the Joint Executive Political Committee between the two partners of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
Riek Machar said in a statement after the meeting at the presidential palace that three subcommittees have completed their work including the Electoral Commission, the council of parties and customs.
He added that the meeting also discussed the declaration of the Electoral Commission and the council of parties.
In a series of meeting held during the first week of August the joint panel agreed to integrate southern Sudan liaison office to the foreign ministry as technical offices also they approved appointment of the chairman f Abyei Administration and his deputy.
Marchar told the reporter today that Abyei subcommittee discusses the appointment of the appointment of the seven members of the Executive Council, and the twenty members of Abyei Area Council.
On August 8, President Omer al-Bashir issued a presidential decree appointing Arop Mayak Mony Toc as Chief of Abyei Administration flanked by Rahama Abdel Rahman Al-Nour as a deputy.
The presidential decree requests the Chief Administrator and his Deputy to present their recommendations within two weeks.
The CPA was not specific on how Abyei Interim Administration could be proportionally set up. He argued that it was only clear in giving 60% to SPLM and 40% to NCP, but fell short on how to divide the executive seats between the two parties.
