WFP: Armed men loot aid convoy in Central Darfur

June 30, 2024 (ZALINGEI) – The World Food Programme (WFP) revealed on Sunday that unknown armed men looted three aid trucks on their way to Central Darfur.

On Thursday, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) reported an increase in the number of hungry Sudanese to 25.6 million people, including 755,000 individuals in the famine stage, which is feared to occur in 14 areas located in Kordofan, Darfur, Al Jazirah, and Sennar.

The WFP stated in a tweet on the “X” platform that ” Today, unidentified armed men attacked three WFP trucks full of food aid en route to Central Darfur.”

The WFP emphasized that the stolen food aid was intended to feed thousands of vulnerable people, urging local authorities to hold the perpetrators accountable.

The WFP did not disclose the incident’s exact location, given the complex security situation in Central Darfur. The region is divided, with six localities under the control of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the remaining three held by the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdel Wahid Nur.

On June 24, the Netherlands Institute of International Relations (Clingendael) stated that based on estimates of harvest, stocks, wheat imports, and humanitarian food aid, it expects 2.5 million people in Darfur and Kordofan – 15% of the population of the two regions – to die by September 2024.

It emphasized that the tipping point at which widespread hunger turns into widespread death has likely already been reached in parts of Sudan in May.
