Speaking to reporters after the court announced its decision; Governor Malong Awan of Northern Bahr El-Ghazal stated that, although the court has not fully given disputed Areas of Abyei to Dinka Ngok, at least 75% is given and this is a great achievement which must be appreciated.

Awan’s comment comes after The Abyei Arbitration Tribunal at The Hague issued its final decision and award to the Representatives of SPLM and government of Sudan ending almost three decades dispute over Abyei boundaries with Messseriya.

The five-member Arbitration Tribunal affirmed the northern boundary of the Abyei region as set by a 2005 Abyei Boundary Commission (ABC), but drew new boundaries in the east and west that placed the Heglig oil fields and the Nile oil pipeline under control of the Khartoum government.

On the same development, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, Vice President of the Government of South Sudan, who was at The Hague representing SPLM, is reported to have said that the parties to the CPA must be judged not by the promises they make, but by the promises they keep.

He, after receipt of the Final Award, is further reported to have added that the decision is balanced. “We are committed to respecting it and I think this is going to consolidate peace in Sudan. It is a victory for the Sudanese people and a victory for peace,” he said.

Similarly, the First Vice President of Sudan and President of the semi government of southern Sudan, General Salva Kiir Mayardit, by phone from Juba to general public in Abyei, congratulated the citizens saying the southern Sudanese populace today share people of Abyei and Messeriya the same happiness of their rights granted by the international court.

“I hope everybody is happy and celebrating the result because nobody is complaining against the other. This is because it is a court decision,” he said.

Interviews conducted with local inhabitants across Abyei who came to attend the announcement by the Permanent Court of Arbitration also conveys signs of total happiness for having finally gotten something to at least own as border.
