Sudan, Saudi Arabia establish joint council to boost strategic ties
August 17, 2026 (RIYADH) – Sudan and Saudi Arabia signed an agreement on Monday to set up a supreme coordination council aimed at deepening political, trade and investment ties, their foreign ministries said.
The pact was signed in Riyadh by Sudanese Foreign Minister Mohieddin Salem and his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan.
The establishment of the Supreme Council for Strategic Coordination and Cooperation follows an agreement reached in March 2025 between the head of the Sudanese Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The Saudi foreign ministry said the council will provide an institutional framework to align policies, facilitate joint development projects, and strengthen economic stability.
Sudan’s foreign ministry said the body will oversee ten key sectors spanning political coordination, commerce, and mutual investments.
The two ministers also led a session of the joint political consultation committee to discuss bilateral relations and regional security developments.
