Panyon paramount chief’s son killed in Lakes state

December 14, 2009 (RUMBEK) – The son of a paramount chief was killed
Saturday at 4:45 p.m., continuing the feud between two sub-clans of
the Panyon tribe, the Papmany and Panguetkur.

Maluer Kuac Manyiel, a son of the Panyon paramount chief, was shot
dead at Lietyer on his way home by armed men from the Panguetkur.

The Payam headquarters at Cueicok has since remained tense as the
state government imposed a curfew starting from 8:00 p.m. until 7:30
a.m. inside Rumbek Center. Cueicok is located eastward of Rumbek town
and is inhabited by the Panyon tribe of Rumbek Centre County.

The women and children of Panyon took up mourning while the whole of
the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) state secretariat and
the Deputy Governor Lt. Col David Nok Marial Buot launched intensive
talks to prevent the victim’s side from taking revenge.

Both the SPLM secretariat of Lakes state and the Deputy Governor
called upon both sides to reconcile as the situation is brought under
control by both community and local government.

In another development, in Yirol West County of Lakes state at Anuol
payam, two pastoralists were wounded by forces of Sudan People’s
Liberation Army (SPLA).

According to an eyewitness, on Sunday afternoon two pastoralists were
passing inside the barracks carrying their guns and they were told by
SPLA soldiers to lay down their arms. But both pastoralists resisted
the order and proceeded ahead, whereupon soldiers immediately opened
fire on them.

Two of them sustained gunshot wounds and now both are admitted to
Yirol hospital, said the source.
