NCP minister votes for separation in N. Bahr el Ghazal

By Ngor Arol Garang

January 15, 2011 (ABYEI) – Tong Akeen, a member of the Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party, says that he cast his vote, in the south’s self determination referendum, for the separation of the region, saying secession is the only popular choice that would bring total peace and stability between north and south Sudan.

“If there is anything which can bring total peace and stability between the north and south, it is the separation option. Separation is the only popular choice for the people of south Sudan,” Akeen told Sudan Tribune from Aweil town, capital of Northern Bahr el Ghazal

Akeen said his membership of the National Congress Party (NCP) does not stop him from voting for separation. “My membership with the National Congress Party has nothing to do with my voting right. This is the constitutional rights granted to south Sudanese and cannot be compromised on the basis of political allegiance. I have not violated any rules and regulations of my party,” said the official.

As NCP has advocated unity, Akeen said that some people were surprised to see him voting for separation.

“Some people were suspicious of me. They did not know my position because I did not tell anybody in the past that I would vote for separation because voting is an individual choice to decide between two options. For them, they did not expect that I would cast my vote in separation box.”

“They were speculating that I would vote for unity because I am a member of the National Congress Party,” he explained. The minister further said even after he voted, some people continued to claim that he voted for separation because he wanted to maintain the ministerial position. I would have voted for it (separation) even if I was not a minister,” he said

“There are people who have voted for separation from other political parties and they are not ministers. There are also people who have voted for separation in the community and are not ministers. They voted because it was their constitutional rights to vote in favor of one of the two options they think would be their right choice. So, the understanding that I voted for separation because of ministerial position I hold is wrong,” he explained.

Voting in the Northern Bahr el Ghazal concluded a successful and peaceful referendum process on Saturday according to, Robert Majok Kuol, a senior member of the five member referendum high committee in the state.

That was a right choice. What you did was conscious voting. Who could believe Abdulla Deng Nhial of National Popular Congress voted for separation! This constitutinal right is above party interest.

Most of South Sudanese might be suspicious for those who have serve under Bashier regime because we can not trust them. Mr minister might have vote for unity and come out to the public that he vote for seperation. How do you think we South Sudanese will belief while your right thumb has been put in ink and you just went to designating area that you choose between seperation and unity. In that place we can not see you voting for our right. I still belief that you might have voted for unity because you have been supporting the party that demand unity. Thanks

we don’t mine whether his trlling fact or not, what we know we are going to be an indepedent nation in a few you days to come.
    The other issueis the following:
Dear brothers, soon south Sudan is going to be an independent nation. No doubt that a lot of challenges are going to face this new born country. Economically, the only source of hard currency in our hand now is oil. At least for coming two years we are going to get about 80% of this oil production due to some considerations of same economy with North which logically can’t be broken instantly in these early stages of separation
Brothers, can we jointly express our opinions on how this 80% (US$ 320000000 a day at rate of 80 US$ per barrel ) of oil revenue could be distributed over one year budget plan of our new born country. IT IS NOT a condition TO BE AN ECONOMNIST IN ORDER TO GIVE YOUR OPINION. My plan as follows
    • 30% to as reserve in our central southern Sudan Ban,
    • 15% for agriculture live stock and fisheries development.
    • 5% for wild life and forestry development to develop tourism and conservation of the environment.
    • 10% for development of education.
    • 10% for development of health services.
    • 5% for development of youth and sports activities.
    • 10% Development of diplomatic ties and national interest.
    • 10% Defence and security.
    • 5% others.
Please this is just my ideas and iam not an economist, may you please improve it.
    Long live southern Sudan
