BREAKING NEWS: South Sudan army clashes with forces of Gabriel Tanginya in Jonglei state
April 23, 2011 (Malakal) – A separate heavy fighting has erupted this morning in Jonglei state between the South Sudan army, Sudan People’s liberation Army (SPLA), and forces loyal to Lt. General Gabriel Tanginya, military sources have told Sudan Tribune.
However, eye witnesses in the area of fighting said the SPLA forces launched the surprise attack against forces of Gabriel Tanginya in the assembly area of Kaldak at around 9:00AM in the morning. It was not clear what prompted the fighting. Sources say forces of Gabriel Tanginya wanted to be reintegrated with their weapons while the SPLA wanted to disarm them first before reintegration.
General Gabriel Tanginya has in the past received weapons from Khartoum, including military vehicles mounted with artilleries. He crossed the North-south border and moved into Jonglei state with his forces in February 2011. He, however, agreed to reintegrate into the SPLA and the process of reintegration was proceeding until the fresh attacks occurred this morning.
Sources who spoke to Sudan Tribune from the area said the fighting was still going on.

To the contrary i mourn the upcoming situation for Salva Kiir and his ever drunkard advisors who mismanage South Sudan. They prove to the world and the jallaba that southerners cannot manage their affairs, let alone using wise leadership to bring to an end rebellions peacefully and shame the jallaba. Kiir and his army generals in Bilpam are fuelling the situation by opening up multiple fronts they will not contain. Why attacking somebody who is in the process of joining you? Are you getting mad? I also believe that the army generals could be doing something Kiir does not understand. Why not advise Kiir that fighting is not the solution? Do you they want to overwhelm Kiir with lots of insecurities so that they bellittle his leadership ability to manage issues and so criminalize his decisions in the eyes of the world? The recent statments by UN security council are not good for Kiir’s leadership. They blame his government for the mess that brewed the rebellions. Blaming Khartoum when you can even attack your reintegrating forces will not go down well with the international community. Kiir should watch his back, otherwise Bilpam generals will drag him to a bottomless pit through their tactics of overwhelming him with lots of insecurities. Nuer militias will definitely be eliminated one by one. Any rebellion led by illiterate will always be a thorn in the flesh of those who support them. Good example is LRA led by Joseph Konyi and the Acholi tribe in Northern Uganda and South Sudan. The same is true with Athor and Fangak Nuer and now Gatdet’s SSLA and Bul Nuer and possibly Gatwech Chan and Fangak Nuer again.
Those militias are exploiting Nuer ignorance by inflicting untold suffering on innocent Nuer communities in those areas sympathetic to them. Pathetic!

Well, guys SPLM the political wing of SPLA army is being short-sighted by the corruption. How on earth the agreement was signed for the militias to be integrated to the national army, and yet the SPLA shot the first bullet to those who are willingly to join our national army? Isn’t that the SPLA is blind enough to start another fresh rebellion? Tanginya could have been used to fight Gatdet , Athor and their supporters as Tanginya himself is not happy with what Athor did to his people in Fangak. Tanginya said that “one of the two, I will capture Athor or Athor will capture me”. SPLA could have waited to see his reaction. Folks, these old politicians and commanders need to give us room as young generation of this country to step up and take over the leadership because they run out of ideas.
I know that they have done their parts, and they brought us the peace we are enjoying right now. They will be remembered and not be forgotten. We will give them what they want as we have vast natural resources. I know that some folks will not aggree with me as those old guys I mentioned still hold guns to intermidate us, and they may not vow to just do that. Believe it or not NGudeng said in a simple language that, my flag will not be mixed with Arab’s flag. That indicates that South Sudan will get its independence no matter what. He warned that after independence there will be war between Southerners, and that war will last for short period of time. He also warned Nuers that everthing that will destroy South Sudan will come from your side, and yet the good thing that will make South sudan to be a recognised nation will come from you. He also said that he will put all those high ranking officers from all tribes to his hut.
That means he will kill them. If you ask me why? I don’t know, hell knows. I am not fan of Ngundeng, but I do believe that all those things he foretold will happen. I do believe that a number of high ranking militia and number of top officials in the GOSS will be killed, but Southern Sudan tribes will not be split a part. They will retreat from those bad things happened to them. Ngundeng also mentioned that after those bad days in South Sudan, he will call his sons and doughters from around the world to fight evil aggression. Now, many people predict that his sons and doughters he said would be called are those in western countries and so on. There will be tribal war, but Southerners will come to term and say enough is enough, and an agreement will be made thereafter.

Does the SPLA understand the importance of keeping its integrity as a national army? I ask this question because of the recent fighting in Kaldak. Why did the SPLA preferred the tactic of terrorists. Making false agreement with rebels, assembling them and then attacking them in their designated assembly point of Kaldak is a serious mistake by the SPLA. This was with the aim to kill all the senior officers including Gabriel Tanginya who was not aware of the plan as he was convinced that he and his forces were reintegrating into SPLA. This same tactic by SPLA was what caused the fighting in Unity state when it lured militia forces to come for reintegration and then attacked them at the location. The same occured to Oliny in Upper Nile when his forces were attacked at an assembly pooint by the SPLA. Also George Athor forces were lured to an assembly point, given no food for days and an attack was under way when his forces detected the move and attacked the SPLA convoy on the way that was coming to attack them at the assembly area. Where did the SPLA get this terroristic and unprofessional way which makes the army institution untrustworthy and unprofessional institution without any integrity at all. I don;t think the other rebels will ever trust the SPLA to make peace with. This has created a very bad image for the army and raised high need to make it a professional army that understands the importance of its integrity when deals with binding agreements and conflict ending processes. It was unfortunate that the SPLA attacked TAnginya with the aim to kill him and all his senior officers when the man thought he had made peace with SPLA and was reintegrating his forces.

You always give a very good comments here and it’s true that we don’t need to generalize people any more, even I said last time that not all Dinkas families are benefiting from the GOSS, there are some families who are also suffering like ours, but what I want to say is this, we the youth of South Sudan have power to either bring peace to this our country or set it ablaze altogether, if we feel like we still want to fight for another years is good and if we want peace then we should stay away from those tribal leaders who are misleading us.

I think some Southern Sudanese are blind to see the trust. I don’t see any reason people blame Dinka for dominating the goverment. The cabinets of GOSS has 2 Dinkas, Salva and Nhial, 3 Nuer Dr. Reik, James Hush, Paulino Matip, one shulluk Pagan, 1 Equatora Jame Wani. When we go to look ministers, we can find every state have representives. So claiming the domination should not solve our problem at all. The Militias/warlords revealed their colors; Now SPLM must open their eyes. It was once said by William Nyuon Bany that “We have people but few people perform right things”
He is right! This is the same thing which has gone for many years. Yes, there is something going wrong in the South Sudan. In fact, during the South-North war, there were numerous rebellions, but they failed after their dirty tactics has become known. The power struggle leaders employed this kind when there is almost some success; there are some who come up with distortions at the margin of progress. Indeed, I am not going to lecture about the rebellions that had occurred in the South. But these are few: The rebels from Anya Nya2 of Akuot Atem and Gach Tut did it when the South Sudanese turn up in large numbers to take up arms against the Khartoum; there is huge setback from 1983-1985. Not only that but when SPLM/A was about to capture Juba in 1992, rebellions occurred from 1991, 1992, 1993, and there we go: now the South is expecting the declaration of independent in July 9, 2011, and then other rebellions within. So, it’s clear that we have something uncivilized among us-something that do not want success.
The leaders of the Republic of South Sudan must check the source of these rebellions before the situation diffuse across the South Sudan. I felt like there is something going on here in the South Sudan. Something like these rumors circulates back in 1990s when Dr Lam Akol and Dr Riek Machar masterminded their defection in 1991. I was in Panyido in Ethiopia at that time when the recent vice president was about to be arrested but Dr John Garang refuse and he said that let the SPLM/A understands his position of his rebellion. The current vice-president called meetings in Panyido and in Markas- the training camp. He said that this time everybody is going to hear the sound of guns. The current president of ROSS/ Salva Kiir following him, but he was not told to arrest him nor any SPLM/A leaders in Panyido. Eventually, he ends up rebels against the SPLM in August 28, 1991. I was in Pachalla at the time. That rebellions cause the SPLM/A to withdrew some troops from Juba deployment in the airport to Bor counties after the militia(SSIM) of Riek Machar turn against Bor civilians after they failed to overthrow Dr John Garang de Mabior. The same happened in Mageri when William Nyuon Bany defect and many other rebellions were tried by many officers who just seek for immediate leadership positions before the elephant was killed.
I knew that we have problems among ourselves and these are not going to end because everyone is looking for presidency and other high positions. Also, there are others who are still suffering from tribalism which makes them to hate SPLM and its leaders. It was told weeks ago that the Khartoum government is working to ploy a coup against the government of the Republic of South Sudan. The document was verified and there were clear indication that the Khartoum government has been working hard to destabilize the South Sudan. The Khartoum also disclosed that the government of South Sudan needs to know that the current vice-president of South Sudan has a crucial linked with the rebels who rebel against the SPLM. And there has been allegation that the SPLM tactics always reached the rebel leaders in there positions. The rebels received information within the GOSS leadership. The VP of the GOSS gets criticism because he has been talking as if he has connection with the rebellion of General Athor Deng. Riek blamed his party that SPLM/A should not handle this rebellions military but peaceful. While the militia leaders keep ordering the attack to the SPLA barracks in Unity, Jonglei, and Upper Nile states. He further said that the military action will turn to tribal issue. But why did says that responding to rebels militias will turn tribal? This is a clear indication that he might be the centre for coordination. He even once allowed his wife to run against the SPLM as independent and he keep quite as if he was innocent. I can not smoke about him.
These rebel activities reminded me about some questions during the referendum. After I went to the voting center in Janary12, 2011, two of my friends asked me some questions about how I fill about this referendum and whether I am confidence that the South Sudan will be a viable state. One of my friends was from Ethiopia and the other was my neighbor from Khartoum who came to the United States as a child. He works in a company closer to my workplace. My Ethiopian friend (his name withheld) asked me are you sure that south Sudan is not going to be like Eretria or Somalia? When he asked me that question I felt something but I have defended myself that we will be a stable state. I asked him why? He simply says he does not know but curious. After I left, I felt that he might be right because we have enemies of peace and these enemies might cause some destabilizations sometimes after or before the independent of the South through dirty tactics that they did in the past, whereby they used South Sudanese militias against their own people in the South.
My Khartoum friend asked a sensitive questions which make me response little different. He asked me do you think that the South Sudan will achieve this independent, and if that happen ,are you guys going to live in unity because of many tribes in the South who hate each other? After I examined his question, I felt like this Arab guy has something that he knows in our history and struggle. I say that we will achieve this independent like the way we let you sign the CPA ,and I told him that our internal issues will be solve by the GOSS but not individual, so when a country has many tribes, it doesn’t mean that there will be an internal issues. See, how proud I am! But I really know that there are some people out there like Monituel Banypiny and Dr Lam Akol who portrayed the South Sudan to the North/Khartoum. These are things that we must watch out in the Republic of the South Sudan: Power struggle within the leadership and the warlords who sold out their services for survival during the South-North war. What do the militias/warlords who fought until the CPA against the South Sudan really want? The SPLM/A must act militarily now before Khartoum or international laugh at us.

THE SPLA DIVISION – FOUR’S HEADQUATERS AT MANKIEN IS OVERRUN BY SSLA FORCES
On 21st April 2011, at about 8.30 AM our SSLA gallant forces launched devastating attacks against SPLA forces and overrun Mankien , which was SPLA Command Control of Division IV Headquarters in Unity State. In that battle, the enemy suffered heavy causalities interns of human and material loses. SPLA left behind several hundred bodies of their dead fighters. However, the SSLA forces shattered enemy’s conveys of three divisions that came from Lakes and Warrap States to reinforce Mankien and Mayom garrisons.
We are therefore, categorically dismissing the naked and unfoundedly allegations being fabricated in different websites and newspapers by SPLA Spokesman Col. Philip Aguer in Juba that our forces have killed some SPLA wounded soldiers whom he claimed to have been evacuated from frontline. He further reputed that our SSLA forces are fighting jointly with the Messerya Arab tribesmen from Southern Kordofan and are conducting systematic killings against unarmed civilians in the area. These are all lies. The demoralised SPLA forces will not slow our high moral down with this naked and mischievous propaganda. The entire Unity State and the rest of South Sudan shall be liberated very soon from these corrupt and opportunists leaders in Juba.
In fact, it was the Unity State Governor Mr. Taban Deng Gai who recently stated clearly in the State Radio on 18th April 2011, that the SPLA forces should wipe out the entire population of Mayom County and destroy their properties, whom he accused of sympathising with the SSLA. It is the Unity State Governor who is currently forcefully conscripting school aged children and unarmed civilians in the State as his own personal militias to protect him against the SSLA beside the SPLA forces operating in the area. He has also collected over 6000 of them and is under trainings. They are forced against their wills which is completely contrary against United Nations Human Rights Charter of Geneva Convention. In this regard, we are humbly appealing to all UN agencies, NGOs agencies, Churches, Human rights Activists and Civil Society Organisations in South Sudan to condemn Mr. Taban Deng’s action.
As shown in our action, tremendous speeds and heroic deeds of SSLA elites units have certainly brought substantial results in war front, Unity State. In this battle code named “Free Unity State”, our forces were able to smash three combined divisions of SPLA, destroyed and captured the followings;
1. Two Tanks destroyed
2. Six trucks destroyed
3. Nine trucks in good conditions
4. Four land cruisers 4Wheel drive in good conditions
5. Six RPGs with several launchers
6. Large quantities of PKMs &AKMs machine guns and ammunitions
7. Seven heavy machine guns.
In this juncture, the Over all Command of South Sudan Liberation Army (SSLA) under Major General Peter Gadet Yak salutes the gallant SSLA forces for their tremendous success which they have shown to the enemy forces in frontline following the fall of Mankien.

Please, may you tell us in which part of this planet that militia generals or whatever you call them did capture any town or change a functioning government by force? I have told you before that any plan whether PLAN B, C or D is on the radar screen of the mighty SPLM/SPLA.
The popular hard-won freedom and peace will be celebrated peacefully without any disruption. The tactics of reintegration while insistent on keeping arms for potential devilish act is an old strategy and unacceptable. If you have power, take it by force on the battle field. We’re ready 24/7. Never say we’re willing to negotiate with SPLM/SPLA without analyzing the basis of the negotiation.
No negotiation, no deal because the right or perhaps the best approach of building unity among southerners, fighting corruption, building infrastructure and preaching democracy is through the barrel of a gun as militia generals are currently demonstrating without considering unnecessary destruction of lives and property besides humanitarian cost.
If you want freedom and peace, remember the amnesty formally granted by the leadership of the SPLM/SPLA. The militia generals have declared war against SPLM/SPLA in broad daylight. We know pretty well that Khartoum wants South Sudan to go in pieces but not in peace. We don’t wish Northern Sudan the same in July because it’s Khartoum’s religious right to promote divisive and discriminating policy against non-Muslims or non-Arabs which resulted today into popular disintegration of the country.
But preparations of celebrating the hard-won freedom and peace will go ahead infront of regional and international dignitaries without any intended disruption. Nobody has the right to temper with it or impose his self-interest on it. Southern Sudan, freedom and peace will prevail at any cost. Remember that Khartoum and his southern militia generals are unconsciously heading permanently towards an exit slowly but surely. Let everybody show his/her true color vividly before July 9, 2011.
