Jonglei state: Landmines threaten resettlement in Fangak

By Philip Thon Aleu

June 21, 2011 (BOR) – James Maluit Ruach, Commissioner of Fangak County in Jonglei State, says landmines allegedly planted by renegade Gen. George Athor are impeding resettlement of displaced persons.

Speaking to reporters in Bor on Monday, the commissioner expressed concern over lack of farming activities in the county and called on all stakeholders to respond swiftly.

“At this time the county [security situation] is calm, stable and secured,” Maluit said when asked to speak about the aftermath of the heavy fighting that took place on 9 and 10 February between the South Sudan army (SPLA) and Athor’s forces in which over 200 people lost their lives and many more were displaced.

In the after of February’s clashes, “we are facing a number of landmines at the county headquarters,” he added.

The county leader claimed that two women had receivedlegs injuries when
landmines exploded recently.

“I am appealing to the international community and the government of southern Sudan to conduct assessment [of planned mines] especially at the headquarters of the county,” he said.

The SPLA fought fierce battles with forces loyal to Gen. Athor in February 2011 resulting to huge lost of civilian lives.

Gen. Athor took up arms against the government of southern Sudan following his defeated in Jonglei State gubernatorial elections in April 2010. In March 2011, the SPLA declared they had defeated Athor’s forces in northern Jonglei state after yet another series of fights. Athor has not being heard of in recent weeks.

Calling on the international community to lead demining of his county, Commissioner Maluit skipped questions on what efforts the county authorities are exerting to help restarting resettlement of local population. He indicated that numerous humanitarian crisis are visible including lack of food and shelter but that demining the area was paramount.

“We need some more NGOs [Non-governmental organisations] to come to do
tools distribution because people are waiting to cultivate. We need more. The government of southern Sudan [should] advise NGOs and state to contribute and mobilise more resources to Fangak County. Without cultivation of those communities, there will be more hunger next year,” the commissioner explained.

South Sudan is due to declare independence on July 9, 2011 having voted overwhelming to secede from the North in January referendum promised in 2005 peace deal. The region relird on imported food items and farming in the villages had been interrupted by local fights over cattle and other resources.

David Yauyau, who started a rebellion at the same time as Athor after loosing his bid to become the commisioner of Pibor County in Jonglei, last week signed a peace deal with the government of South Sudan.

You Nuer, Do you think one day one time leadership can come to your community? Riek Machar is only known for murder and cannot be a leader of the people – I don’t think he will reach next year before he is taken by ICC for crimes of genocide in Bor which will be triggered soon. Only Taban Deng can partly be a leader but still Anyagat. It is clear now, all Nuers cannot make a meaningful leadership because of their irresponsible idiot mentality. I do not understand why Nuers are always irresponsible, is genetic associated aspect or what?

For example, when Garang brought peace is now Sudan for all of us including Nuer and when it comes to war, they will be agaist and this shows that Nuer objective is only to eat and stay hostile – unexplanatory creatures.

    Garang’s Vision,

No difference between Nuer and Dinka if it is then it is the marks on the face. Athor is Dinka, Abdel Bagi is a Dinka, now what is the difference between these two and other Nuers in the bush fighting Kirr’s government which is also crippled led by dull president?

Come on guys stop only living on innocent blood of people for getting food. Learn to organize conferences to address issues like what Equatorians are doing. Not everything to rebel, everything fight, over food.

Come to your senses and reason well otherwise you need prayers to send away evil spirit in you dinkas and Nuers.

Now Fangak fertile land had been rendered useless by activities of imprudent anyagats who thought they had gotten a leader from Dinka to lead their anyagats group but to their dismay it turned out to be a disaster on them.
These are the consequences of anyagats blindly supporting anyagats.

Riek Machar supporters and all other independent traitors

Part 1 – Unity between Drs. John Garang and Riek Machar
There was no unity between Riek Machar and John Garang in a sense you are putting it in your message but the later was persuaded to stop anarchy and mass lootings and killings of civilians in Upper Nile by forgiving Riek Machar and giving him a senior position in SPLA/M so that various Nuer warlords in Upper Nile who were causing mayhems and murdering civilians in masses could gain hope of being forgiven and reaccepted into SPLA/M.
After Riek Machar narrowly escaped death after his body guards were forcefully disarmed by NIF security agents. He was smuggled out of Khartoum to Nairobi, Kenya by foreign sympathizers without even a single body guard. While in Nairobi, Kenya completely demoralized and planning to go to exile in a western country, some friends of South Sudan in America saw an opportunity to stop anarchy and rampant killings and lootings in Upper Nile created by former Riek Machar supporters turned independent rival warlords.
The idea as said above was to persuade John Garang to forgive Riek Machar, give him a senior position in SPLA/M and issue a blanket amnesty for all former SPLA/M Nasir faction members and other independent warlords in Upper Nile to re-join SPLA/M Mainstream so that Nuer warlords could be removed from Upper Nile and assigned duties in South Sudan elsewhere so that lootings and killings could stop in Upper Nile region.
John Garang liked the idea and accepted it so that innocent civilian lives and properties could be spared from those ruthless Nuer warlords. John Garang implemented the idea and all Nuer warlords were removed from Upper Nile region to Rumbek and assign duties in South Sudan elsewhere by 2003.
So it was not a strategy brought by Riek Machar but Riek Machar was used so that Upper Nile people especially Nuer population could be saved from extinction due to merciless warlords’ activities that included indiscriminate killings, lootings and raping. Of course, Riek Machar benefited in that process and that is why he is a vice president now after being recovered fully wasted and exhausted by his own poor thinking. Pathetic creature!
Part 2 – Riek Machar sold South Sudanese into Everlasting Slavery in 1991 just to be Al Bashir’s English Interpreter
Riek Machar made southerners weak as a result of his 1991 rebellion and was it not because of Dinka people strong support of John Garang’s vision and commitment to fine results/outcomes regardless of difficulties, South Sudan was almost gone to savages and Islamic fundamentalists and terrorists.
You can never get your full rights when you are negotiating on a weak position. I should not elaborate this point much because you know very well the fate of Addis Ababa Peace Agreement and KPA which were negotiated on weak positions. There is no way you can justify that Riek Machar rebellion allied to South Sudan main enemy was helping South Sudan people to get their rights by weakening their true liberation movement and succumb it to the negotiating table fully weakened to extent of having no ability to demand something substantial such as self-determination and separate army to safe guide South Sudan interests in case of resumption of hostilities. It was clear, when Riek Machar surrendered the whole of Upper Nile land and oil to Arabs, NIF/NCP was no longer willing to negotiate peace with SPLA/M mainstream but instead went on military offensive with the morale boasted by Riek Machar surrender to crash SPLA/M throughout Equatoria in 1992, the only SPLA/M stronghold by then. NIF/NCP and Arabs only accepted peace talks and mediation after SPLA/M became strong again and began to wage dreadful attacks against Arabs forces, and Riek Machar militias from 1993 onwards. NCP/NIF only accepted peace after recognizing through several defeats of their forces that SPLA/M had fully recovered from Riek Machar disastrous split of the movement and his wastage of South Sudan manpower and military assets which were deployed to his area of command.
So my brother, just accept shame and request for forgiveness from your visionary and resilient brothers (Dinka) who finally brought you freedom on a golden plate after Riek Machar and his followers almost surrendered South Sudanese into everlasting slavery.
On GOSS corruption, the problem is a South Sudan problem not a Dinka problem, do you think Riek Machar and other Nuer members in GOSS are clean people in that corruption? All GOSS elites are corrupt and must be condemned for that behaviour not Dinka officials alone
