Warnings of an explosive situation in eastern Sudan: report

December 10, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – The security situation in eastern Sudan is a “volcano waiting to erupt” due to continued marginalization and prevalence of arms, according to sources cited by a UN media agency.

The grossly-underdeveloped region of eastern Sudan was the scene of an armed conflict that erupted in 1994 between the Sudanese government and a clutch of tribal groups accusing it of neglecting the region. The conflict ended in October 2006 with a peace deal brokered by the Eritrean government which had previously supported the rebels.

However, some of rebel factions of the Bejas, who form the largest ethnic group in the region, rejected the deal and recently joined the ranks of the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF), an umbrella group comprising rebels from the western region of Darfur and southern regions of South Kordofan and Blue Nile.

In declaring its decision to join the SRF, which aims to overthrow the government of president Al-Bashir, the Beja Congress said that the “misery and suffering of the [Beja] people is increasing due to poverty, starvation and other deadly diseases. The ruling regime in Sudan is subjecting its people to humiliation and tyranny. They are arrogant and killing the marginalized people. ”

In a report published on Thursday by the Integrated Regional Information Networks (IRIN), an online news service affiliated to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, local and UN officials in the region sounded the alarm over growing discontent in the region.

According to an unnamed UN official quoted in the report, the situation in eastern Sudan is like a “volcano waiting to erupt.”

He reported that Beja soldiers are gathered in the Hamid town on the borders with Eritrea, saying that a conflict similar to those seen in Blue Nile and South Kordofan could erupt in Kassala state “within a few months.”

The UN source also referred to reports that surfaced three months ago in the media about a military buildup in the area by a dissident faction of the Beja Congress led by Omer Mohamed Taher

Sudanese officials at the time dismissed the reports and expressed confidence that the situation in the region was stable.

IRIN pointed out that the prevalence of arms in the region increases the risk, citing a local official who said that the disarmament process that was conducted after the peace deal only managed to gather guns and ammunitions from some of the fighters “not the majority.”

In mid October, Kassala state saw a wave of students protests that was sparked by worsening economic conditions. The unrest resulted in the injury of a few students.

According to Ahmed Tirik, a member of parliament cited by IRIN, the situation in Kassala is “unpredictable.”

People like Sam are the arrogant type that the article mentioned, they think they own the country and everything in it! Its just a matter of time before they’ll be wishing they had chosen a different path.

One of equality, inclusivity, tolerance and brotherly spirit. But unfortunately some of them will go to their grave with their bigoted mentalities.

60% of N. Sudan are Arabs, where do you get your fake stats from! Maybe Arabized Africans but definitely not Arabs, the real Arabs of N. Sudan don’t even make up 10% (Rashyada, Biny Amer and a couple of off shoot tribes in the northern triangle.

When Sudan was united it was nowhere near 48%, and even if that was accurate it would still indicate the majority were Africans.

    Stop dreaming.
