Sudan’s ruling party approves nomination of a Presidential representative in Darfur
KHARTOUM, June 24, 2004 (SUNA) — The Leadership Bureau of the National Congress approved in its meeting Wednesday night nomination by the President of the Republic, Gen. Omer Al-Bashir, of Maj. Gen. Abdul-Rahim Mohammed Hussein as Representative of the President of the Republic in Darfur States to oversee implementation of the provisions contained in the Political Declaration issued by the President of the Republic and coordination among the states.
The Leadership Office also approved nomination of Engineer Al-Haj Attalmanan as wali (governor) of South Darfur State. Secretary General of the National Congress Prof. Ibrahim Ahmed Omer said in a statement to SUNA that the Leadership Office heard a briefing by the President of the Republic on the situation in Darfur and the political declaration on realization of security and stability in Darfur and the positive response the declaration has received.
He said the nominations made by the President of the Republic of a representative for him in Darfur and wali for South Darfur State came in the context of implementation of the provisions of the political declaration and to guarantee security for the citizens, open relief passages and re-composition of leaderships in South Darfur.
Prof. Omer said the First Vice President presented a briefing on the latest developments in the peace process as well as the visits he made to a number of countries, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Tunisia and Libya.
The Secretary General of the National Congress presented a briefing on visits made by delegations of the party to the states of the country to explain developments of the peace process.
