Sudan annual inflation rate falls to 156.32% in April
May 15, 2025 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan’s annual inflation rate fell to 156.32% in April from 173.70% in March, the state statistics bureau said on Thursday.
The decrease represents a drop of 17.38 percentage points between the two months.
The annual inflation rate measures the change in the overall price level for the current month compared to the same month in the previous year.
The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) said in a statement received by Sudan Tribune that the year-on-year change in the general price level in April rose by 156.32%.
It added that inflation for the key food and beverages group increased by 108.80% in April compared to the same month a year earlier.
The CBS calculates inflation based on a basket of 663 commodities representing consumption patterns across different economic, social, and geographical groups in rural and urban areas. These are divided into 12 main groups, led by food and beverages, followed by tobacco, clothing and footwear, housing, electricity, fuel, health, transportation, communications, and education.
Sudanese households spend 52.89% of their income on food and beverages, 14.17% on housing, water, electricity, gas, and fuel, and 8.34% on transportation.
The bureau reported that the urban inflation rate in April was 147.52%, down from 165.13% in March.
Rural inflation reached 163.73% in April, compared to 181.68% recorded in March.
Many Sudanese have lost their livelihoods and sources of income due to the ongoing conflict and are struggling with soaring prices for essential goods. An estimated 30.4 million people, representing 64% of the population, are in need of humanitarian assistance.
