S. Sudan activists plan demonstration in New York in support of sanctions

April 11, 2015 (JUBA) – Thousands of South Sudanese living in different parts of the United States are organising a demonstration in support of UN sanctions against those blocking the peace process.

The proposed sanctions would freeze the assets and restrict travel of people accused of human rights violations during the latest conflict in South Sudan and stalling peace efforts.

Government officials, however, say imposing sanctions would undermine the efforts as many of those involved in the peace process as many who would likely be targeted are key influential figures in the regime.

The protest, which is planned to take place on April 28, is being organised by the US-based South Sudan International Advocacy for Human Rights.

The group is calling on South Sudanese living in the United States and Canada to take part in a nationwide demonstration planned to take place at the UN headquarters in New York.

Activist Peter Kuel said their group is advocating for tougher sanctions on individuals obstructing the peace process.

“Enough is enough. We believe sanctions are the only options to end the current war in South Sudan. We are calling for sanction and accountability,” one of the flyers promoting the demonstration seen by Sudan Tribune reads in part.

Kuel said organisers are expecting thousands of South Sudanese in the US to turn out, with many already expressing a readiness to participate in the one-day march.
Protesters are expected to hold signs with slogans such as “Stand with the people of South Sudan” and “Salva Kiir must go.”
