June 12, 2025 (CAIRO) – Egypt has warned Sudanese politicians residing in the country that they could be denied re-entry if they attend a planned political meeting in Geneva, political sources in Cairo told the Sudan Tribune.

The meeting, scheduled for June 18 and sponsored by the French mediation organization Promediation, aims to bring together Sudanese political forces to sign a national document outlining a future political process.

According to the sources, the warning was conveyed in a message to some politicians. It stated that participants would not be granted new entry permits to Egypt, even if they hold valid residency, as read in the message seen by Sudan Tribune.

The reasons for the Egyptian warning were not immediately clear.

An invitee to the Geneva event told the news outlet that the meeting has been postponed to allow the political groups, “especially those residing in Egypt, to reconcile their situations.”

However, other sources cited by the report said that party leaders from the “Smoud” political alliance had not received any such warnings from Egypt, despite being officially invited to attend.

Since the war began in Sudan, Cairo has become a base for numerous Sudanese political figures, including leaders from the Democratic Bloc and Smoud alliances, as well as officials from the former regime.

Promediation is involved in conflict resolution efforts in several African nations and has been organizing a series of workshops for the Sudanese parties since November 2024, according to the report.
