Dongola court dismisses criminal case against activist Munib Abdel Aziz

April 27, 2026 (DONGOLA) – A general court in Dongola on Monday dismissed criminal proceedings against activist Munib Abdel Aziz, ending a legal battle that lasted more than five months.

Abdel Aziz was arrested following a public speech delivered on December 19 to mark the anniversary of the December Revolution. He initially faced severe charges under Articles 50, 51, and 26 of the Sudanese Penal Code, including undermining the constitutional system and inciting war against the state.

Those initial charges were previously dropped due to insufficient evidence. However, the prosecution later amended the indictment to include Articles 62, 66, and 69 of the Penal Code, as well as Articles 24 and 26 of the Informatics Crimes Act.

The revised charges included inciting discontent among regular forces, publishing false news to threaten public safety, and acts leading to a breach of public peace. Article 62 carries a potential prison sentence of five years.

Abdel Aziz had been released on bail in February 2026 while the litigation continued.

Following the court’s decision to strike out the case, a local advocacy campaign described the ruling as a victory for justice. In a press statement, the campaign argued the case lacked a solid legal basis and was intended to criminalize peaceful expression.

The campaign added that the dismissal of the charges underscores the importance of the rule of law and the protection of rights and freedoms, particularly during conflicts where legal procedures can be used to restrict activists.

Advocates called for continued support for those they described as oppressed, stressing that freedom and justice are maintained through awareness and resilience.
