China lends Sudan USD 3.6 million, USD 1.2 million aid

KHARTOUM, July 5, 2005 (KUNA) — Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Wei Jianguo said on Tuesday that his government agreed to lend Sudan USD 3.6 million as an interest-free loan to finance some projects in addition to USD 1.2 million in humanitarian aid.

In a speech addressing the two countries’ joint ministerial committee, Jianguo said that 50 Chinese companies have been investing more than USD four billion in Sudan, establishing grand projects such as Al-Khartoum refinery in addition to several power stations, roads and bridges.

Jianguo called upon the Khartoum’s government to provide more facilities to the Chinese companies working in Sudan, and provide enough protection for workers in the petroleum sector.

Jianguo invited Sudan to join efforts with China to form a joint team to conduct studies to find a new cooperation model following the peace agreement between the Khartoum government and the rebels.

Sudanese State Minister of International Cooperation Ishraqah Mahmoud welcomed the Chinese delegation and lauded the development in the bilateral relations, which have been based on mutual interest.

Mahmoud praised the achievements of Chinese companies in Sudan and their vital role in accelerating bilateral trade and economic relations.
