Sudan, Eritrea to open new chapter in bilateral ties – communiqué
Oct 14, 2005 (KHARTOUM) — Sudan and Eritrea Thursday concluded their official talks here and issued a joint communiqué in which they affirmed the desire of the two countries to open a new chapter in the bilateral relations in the light of the current political developments.
In the final communiqué published by the official Sudan News Agency (SUNA), the two sides stressed the importance of taking steps that are necessary to pave the way for building confidence, top of which is cessation of media campaigns.
The two sides agreed to set up a joint ministerial committee, co-chaired by the two Ministers of Foreign Affairs, which will establish technical sub-committees to discuss common issues and to boost cooperation in all fields.
The two sides further agreed on a visit to Eritrea by a high-level Sudanese delegation in the coming period to continue dialogue.
The communiqué welcomed the initiative taken by the Eritrean government and the prompt response of the Sudanese government as a basic move to promote the bilateral relations.
The two sides further referred to the deeply-rooted historic, social and cultural links between the peoples of Sudan and Eritrea, stressing importance of working to enhance these relations to serve the common interests of the peoples of the two countries.
The two sides affirmed importance of continued contacts at all levels to restore confidence and to develop the relations in the future in order to serve the mutual interests and to realize stability.
The communiqué moreover explained that the two sides reviewed in transparency and objectivity the bilateral relations in the last 10 years and touched on the future of these relations and means of boosting them further in light of the current political developments in the two countries and in the regional and international arenas.
