Cardinal Sepe visits Sudan’s Rumbek

Feb 21, 2006 (RUMBEK) — Governor of Lakes State John Lat Zechariah and several MPs welcomed the Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, the prefect of the Congregation for Evangelization who visited Rumbek today.

It is the first visit for a high ranking Catholic religious to a war ravaged territory like Bhar-El-Gazal region since war started in earlier 1983 between Sudan people’s liberation Army (SPLA)/ and the Islamic regime in the north (GOS).

The 2nd reading was selected from the book of Gospel Luke: 24:44-53: In he name repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to the entire nation.

Thousand of people gathered to welcome Cardinal Sepe, while he stepped down in Lakes State Rumbek. Many people kissed the hand of H.E Cardinal Sepe get bless.

“The arrival of Sepe to Rumbek reminded many people the arrival of the late Dr. John Garang De Mabior” says Deborah Aker, a Dinka lady based in Rumbek for almost 22 year civil war.

Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, brought encouragement to Catholic seminarians in Khartoum during a pastoral visit to Sudan.

“The Church has much confidence in you, and if you respond with generosity to the vocation of the Lord, you will be the principal authors of the growth of the Church, notwithstanding the great challenges you will have to face,” the cardinal told students at St. Paul’s seminary, which is marking its centenary this year.
