Sudan dominant party denounces SPLA attack in Abyei
May 20, 2008 (KHARTOUM) — The National Congress Party (NCP) denounced attack by the Sudan People’s Liberation Army against the Sudan Armed Forces in the disputed Abyei today morning saying it was a clear violation of the security arrangements protocol included in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
Deadly fighting erupted on Tuesday when the SPLA troops attacked at dawn the positions of the SAF infantry Brigade 31 in Abyei in a bid to take the control of the town. The northern Sudanese army said it had soldiers killed and wounded in the assault but that it repulsed the attack.
Al-Dirdiri Mohamed Ahmed, a leading member of the National Congress Party and one of Sudanese government negotiators in Naivasha talks said that the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, by taking the control of the area, had transgressed the CPA.
“There are clear texts in the CPA about security measures that should be taken in this region during the transitional period, and imposing an administrator is not among them.” he said.
Mohamed Ahmed further reiterated the NCP’s commitment to all the provisions of the 2005 signed peace deal and urged the southern Sudan ruling party to end its aggression and listen to the voice of reason.
“We in the NCP, as we confirm our full commitment to the CPA, warn that the current situation in the region caused by SPLM’s actions may be detrimental to all the efforts made towards bringing peace and stability to the area and towards the implementation of the CPA, especially the Abyei Protocol.”
The oil-rich area of Abyei, which is near the border between north and south Sudan, has been one of the main stumbling blocks to the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).
In accordance with the CPA, a SAF-SPLA battalion has to be formed in the town of Abyei assigned to protect the area. But the SPLA redeployed 3000 force withdrawn from the Eastern Sudan in Akec and Majock around Abyei, this move pushed SAF to maintain the Infantry Brigade 31 in the area.
In a statement issued on May 18 the northern Sudanese army accused the SPLM representative in Abyei, Edward Lino of saying he would not implement a deal brokered by the UN last week end where it is agreed to redeploy SPLA force out of Abyei.
According to the UN sponsored deal, the SPLA troops should be pulled out to their previous position south of the river, while the SAF troops have to remain confined to their barracks inside Abyei and they should not be deployed outside the camps of the infantry Brigade 31.
SAF spokesman Brig Osman Mohamed al-Aghbash, who described today attack as” unprecedented development”, has said the residents of Abyei town had been evacuated as a result of the attack by the SPLA, Sudan People’s Liberation Army, on 18 May.
Al-Aghbash said that “the 31 Infantry Brigade of the armed forces was deployed north of the 1956 border line, and SPLA’s presence in the area, instead of consigning themselves to the assembly areas defined in the agreement, was a blatant violation”.
He added that Sudan People’s Liberation Movement had “unilaterally set up an administration and a police force in Abyei, which was also in clear breach of the peace Agreement which had led to the friction which resulted in the recent problems”.
Abyei lies just north of the disputed boundary line between north and south Sudan and remains contested despite a 2005 peace accord that ended a 21-year civil war, which left an estimated 2 million people dead.
The U.N. says between 30,000 and 50,000 people have been displaced by the recent fighting. The casualty count is difficult to determine because of the ongoing violence.

Mohamed Ahmed your crazy i think so strongly,when did you come to know that SPLA were the first to attack NCP troops while NCP troops are living in Southern area.SPLA must not pull out of that area it’s only fire if you wish.just back yourselves if your interested in peace.otherwise NCP is playing against the CPA roles rather than talking about SPLA on their rights.

Being sincere to the current situation in Abyei ,there would be no reason for the SAF to stay with in the Abyei town and SPLA Out side the town .
Both need to be out of the town and puting the SAF within the town is the cause of the current attack as you denounced it ,that definitly means you are responsible for, you NCP that is headed Omer Hassan El Bashir .

We all know the arabs are not peace lovers,first of all it is mentioned in their sitanic book so called Qu’ran that a Christian can not married a muslim what so ever unless you are converted to islam.But muslim can then what kind of unity do they want us to be one sudan if south happened to be disert like northern sudan am sure they with have been no war. They are looking only for our OIL but not every body in south southern.

Is Abyei north or south of the boundary between north and south Sudan?
In this and every press report on the internet it says that “Abyei lies just north of the disputed boundary line between north and south Sudan“.
Am I wrong to believe that there was a boundary commission which was set up by agreement with Khartoum to set the border by an independent procedure? Did this not result in setting the Abyei border at 0°22’30”N., 87 km north of the town of Abyei?

Sudan Army should move north of 1956 border but also move out of Abyie as stipulated in the CPA, CPA does not say Sudan Army should be inside Abyie within the 1956 border.
SPLA should also move its forces south of 1956 border.
If CPA is to be followed as Mohammed Al-Dirdiri is claiming then that has to start from the Khartoum regime side, the CPA says Abyie protocol should be implemented and both sides should accept the final Abyie report by the border experts.
So all the parts of the agreement should be implemented by the Sudan government, they shouldn’t pick the part that fits them and leave out what does not fit them, also the same for SPLA.
-Government of Sudan not accepting the final Abyie border commission report is a clear CPA violation.
-Keeping Sudan Army or SPLA inside Abyie is also a clear CPA violation, both troops need to be outside of Abyie.
-Sudan government arming militia to attack southern civilians is all clear violations and not acceptable.
-Peace needs sincerity and true spirit of commitment without violations as seen with the Sudan government, this is something lacking with the Khartoum regime.
The khartoum regime needs to implement this peace accord in spirit and letter as agreed upon before, there is no any other way out, the earlier they realise it the better it can be.
Abyie was peaceful untill the Sudan Army entered the town a few days ago and started killing civilians.

Which is one of the sensitive protocol in CPA. Why didn’t Watchdogs talk? Are you fearing to be chased out of Khartuom like what happened to John Prunk in 2006? tell truth and truth will set you free.

May 20, 2008 (Abyei NSV) – The Sudan Armed Forces (SAF)’s 31st Brigade demolished the only major bridge linking Abyei and Bhar El Ghazal on Tuesday, eyewitnesses told NSV.
“Sudan armed forces went with armored Land Cruisers and tanks towards the bridge, shortly after they returned to the town of Abyei after 11am,” an eyewitness said.
Fierce fighting resumed on Tuesday at around 4 am and ended at 8am, claiming several lives. “Dead bodies are everywhere including [at] our trenches,” said Ahmed Abdalla Sherif, SAF soldier from the ruins of the town.
SPLA shelled the town over the night from across the direction of Bonton where SAF thought to have been returning from the bridge. SPLA detachment retreated back southwards from the bridge that SAF demolished with some mortars believed to be from the tanks that rolled towards the bridge. The bridge over Kiir River was the only link between Kordofan and south Sudan through Abyei enclave. Built in 2005, the destruction of the bridge is seen by SAF as strategically cutting off SPLA from recapturing Abyei town.
Among the dead within SAF soldiers on the morning of 20th May, included that of a notorious Meseriya security officer who is believed to have been responsible for the murders of several Ngok youths and intellectuals during the revolution in the 1990s.
In another development, Dinka Ngok and entire SPLM leadership in Abyei will be in mourning mood after one of their leaders, a young revolutionary leader who faced NIF policies in Abyei during worse moments in Abyei is believed to have been shot at Bonton when SAF went to destroy the bridge on Tuesday morning.
Sources from Abyei confirmed that the Ngok youth leader was carried by SAF together with four others. Their fate is unknown. “They shot him in the neck; chest and shrapnel littered his face. They brought him in Abyei naked!” a soldier who seeks anonymity claimed.
Both SPLM and NCP leadership are silent about Abyei destruction. Citizens of Abyei numbering more 50, 000 are in dire humanitarian situation. Some have already reached Wau since 18th May.
