June 24, 2011 (BOR) – Hundreds of people have been killed and a large number of cattle stolen in Pibor county in South Sudan’s largest state Jonglei following clashes between the Murle and Lou Nuer ethnic groups the county’s commissioner says.
In March 2009, over 453 people were killed and 120 women abducted during attacks carried out by thousands of armed people of the Lou Nuer who attacked 17 settlement in Pibor. In retaliation, the Murle assaulted Nuer villages in Akobo county, killing more than 250 people, and abducting more than 30 children.
The UN agencies estimate that the attacks and counter-attacks of 2009 forced some 26,000 people to flee their homes in Pibor and Akobo counties.
Pibor’s commissioner Akot Mazee said that thousands of armed young men from Akobo, Ayod, Duk, Nyirol, Twic East and Uror counties attacked his county on 15 June destroying Gumuruk, Lekuangule and Pibor Payams or districts.
Mazee told Sudan Tribune that massive numbers of Murles have been killed. He estimated that since the fighting began on 15 June around 900 people have died.
Mazee further said the well armed attackers had burned houses, raided cattle and abducted some children in the areas. He pointed out that machine guns, hand-grenades, RPG 7 rockets and AK 47 rifles were used.
Jonglei State’s deputy governor, Maar Nyuot confirmed and condemned the attacks but declined to give a death toll.
The minister of law enforcement in the Jonglei, Duop Lam also confirmed the assaults but was not sure of how many people had been killed or the number of cattle raided.
Lam said Jonglei has called for the intervention of huge forces from the South Sudan army to put to an end the fighting.
“As the state, we having been for the intervention of huge forces. Our police can[not] control either Lou [Nuer] or [the] Murle”, said Lam.
In 2009 attacks, UN officials in South Sudan spoke about the use of sophisticated firearms in the inter-tribes clashes. A UNMIS force had been deployed but suggested that a sustainable solution involves disarming the local population and a proactive deployment of state security forces in areas of potential conflict.
Local officials explain that the lack of infrastructures complicates the quick intervention of the army.
However the Nyirol County commissioner Isaac Kuach, denied that the attack was launched by the Lou Nuer on Murle saying it might have been a criminal gang that attacked Pibor.
Kuach admitted that his people sometimes retaliate and take “revenge” after being attacked by Murle, but said he has no knowledge that the current attack was organised by people from his county.
“I don’t have any information about the people of Nyirol leaving and attacking the Murle. If it was an organised attack, I should have known it”, he said.
“If there are, it may be amalgamation of thieves who might have organised themselves and attack Murle whether because of revenge or to get wealth, I don’t know”, Kuach continued.

Those attackers are some youth from Lou-Nuer revenging the recent attacks by Murle armed groups.
All in all, it is very unfortunate that the killings continue in Jonglei state.
But commissioner, don’t lie too much. And also acknowledge your people’s criminal and provocative behaviors of abducting and murdering people from other communities.

Dear Southerners and the World
The fight which is carried out by Lou Nuer is not a cattle raiding as many of you may think, it is simply military exercise organized and sponsored by the some of the senior leaders within the government circle.
Raiding is always charaterise by few groups of raiders who are seeking cattle and they normally attack, get little cattle that they get their hands on and run back to their villages. But this attack is well organize attack conducted by soldiers from seven counties.
The attackers viewed this attack as a punishment to the Murle community regarding the crimes they have committed in previous years. But the raids carried out by Murle are pure raids usually initiated by 5 or maximum of 10 criminals. The one of Lou Nuer is military operation which is deeply orchestrated by Nuer leaders against the government in fulfilment of Nguon Deng prophesies.
As community, we want to question Nuer leadership about their political careers. For us it seem that Nuer are completely barbaric and badly unqualified to lead the people. Yes Nuer can not lead this country because it is usually impossible for the leadership to be given to the person whom his ambition is to exterminate the rest of the people in the country. Nuer are not intellegent enough because they sent their foolish Dr. so called Riak to go and compaign for the presidency while his people are killing the same people, this will not work in at all.
For information, Murle have withdrawed their little support from Dr. Riak unconditionally and fully given it to Kiir or someone who is not tribally minded. This is a definite truth.
Nuer must read my lips people of southern Sudan will not and will never support you as your tendency of finishing the rest is rising alarmingly. We prefer Dinka Of Bhar El ghazzel to keep the power till the time when one of the small tribes is going to take it over because Dinka Bhar El Ghazzel are playing with money but they don’t insult people in streets like what Dinka Bor us to do during Garang era.

The Eastern Jikany Nuer Warriors led by Captain Mut Dung attacked the advanced troops, sustaining heavly loses on both sides and Lt. Col. Bacon’s life was also wasted as a result.
It is also quite clear that Nuer military domination of the coward Jaang/Slaves and other Jurs has been grounded in their capacity to field a numberically superior fighting force, and in the organizational features through which mobilzation on a large scale was effective. Other aspects of the Nuer advantage were secondary and derivative. Nuer Warriors tactics are relatively simple and straightforward.
Had the Mighty Nuer Warriors wished to occupy the whole greater Upper Nile, from Renk to Mading Bor and from Ruweng-Abiemnhom to Buma/Piboir-Gambella, it seems unlikely that the other coward Jurs (Dinka, Shilluk, Anyuak, Murle, Burun, Komo…) could have stopped them.
