Pastoralist in critical condition after Rumbek shooting
June 26, 2013 (RUMBEK) – A South Sudan army (SPLA) army soldier was on accused of shooting a 25-year-old lad in a villaged in Lakes state’s Rumbek East county.
The state and county authorities claim man shot was behind a series of road robberies, between Rumbek East and Rumbek Central county.
The suspected is alleged to have participated in killing a South Sudanese soldier in Pulkuc last May when a car carrying soldiers was ambushed. Several soldiers sustained gunshot wounds.
According to an eyewitness the man who was shot was, Chol Matueny, who was with other armed civilians at the time. Gunfire was exchanged between the army and the group and Matueny sustained gunshot wounds to his back but managed to escape.
Rumbek East county commissioner, David Marial Gumke, confirmed the incident saying that authorities were still trying to capture Matueny.
“Yes, it is true, Matueny was shot wound on Wednesday by our forces, it is because Matueny was carrying an AK47 with his other friend. Matueny was behind [the] shooting in Pulkuc that left one SPLA solider dead in May. There are several crime records against Matueny, he will not escape justice although his is being shot injury.”
A family member who requested anonymity dismissed government accusations level against Matueny as “baseless” and without evidence. He added that Matueny was being confronted for unknown reasons by soldiers who he said may have been under the influence of alcohol.
In a separate story, Lakes state prison services have arrested 14 out of 28 prison warden officers who are alleged to had deserted their duties station in remote area of Amony-ping over the weekend.
Lakes states director of prison’s, Bol Ador Adeer, says the officers were among 28 staff who abandoned their duty stations at a new prison capability in Among-Piny payam during last weekend.
Ador says the arrested officers have been transferred to Langcok detention facility as investigations into the incident continue.
