Lakes state’s Good News Radio may face closure

June 26, 2013 (JUBA) – Ministers in South Sudan’s Lakes state are expected to discuss the fate of Good News Radio on Thursday, and will consider closing the broadcaster that belongs to the Catholic Diocese of Rumbek.

On Tuesday Good News Radio received a letter from Lakes state’s ministry of information and communication telling the administration to meet the minister and present the license of operation, the mandate and programs run by the station.

The radio station’s administration presented the required documents to Minister Dut Makoi Kuok in a meeting at the Ministry’s premises on Wednesday.

Following the meeting, Makoi said he would report his findings to the Council of Ministers after studying the documents.

He added that the Cabinet will discuss and decide whether Good News Radio, which is part of the Catholic Radio Network, will be allowed to continue or whether it will be closed.

The threat appears to confirm long running rumors that the Rumbek government had premeditated the closure of radio station.
