Taban Deng’s brother-in-law shot dead in Juba

January 20, 2016 (JUBA) – A brother-in-law of the Chief Negotiator of the South Sudanese opposition faction of SPLM-IO, Taban Deng Gai, has been shot dead by unknown gunmen in the national capital, Juba.

Relatives of the deceased told Sudan Tribune that the victim, Michael Gorong Ngundeng, was shot many times inside his house by gunmen who attacked him in his compound and followed him into his room where they shot him and left him for dead.

Jeck Nhial Nuor, a relative to the deceased who took him to hospital, narrated that Ngundeng was shot at 1:48am and died at 3:29am in hospital due to huge blood loss and lack of adequate medical care at the hospital, relatives have said.

It was not clear why the incident which occurred since 16 January was not revealed to the public or the press until Wednesday, 20 January, four days later.

Relatives have described the killers as “unknown gunmen” and their motives remained unclear. It was not clear whether an investigation was being conducted to apprehend the assailants.

They however ruled out a possibility that they killers were night robbers, adding that they did not take any of his belongings. They also did not kill anybody else in the house including the late’s wife who was also in the room when her husband was attacked.

Ngundeng, a young educated man in his 30s, was working with the Nile Petroleum Corporation, an oil company run by the South Sudanese government.
