Sudan regrets that Washington equated between government and rebels
February 22, 2016 (KHARTOUM) – Sudanese government Monday regretted that the American administration had equated between the government and rebels when in a recent statement where it blamed a Darfur rebel group for initiating in Jebel Marra area.
“in itself, this is an objective approach that was absent in the previous statements of the State Department,” Sadiq said.
“However, the foreign ministry notes that the (American) appeal (to cease hostilities) contained in the statement, equated between the aggressor and the victim. It would have been better if the statement charged the (Sudan Liberation Movement faction led by Abel Wahid al-Nur) of the full responsibility of initiating the fighting and the resulting displacement,” he further said.
The Sudanese diplomat also pointed that Washington should have to condemn the rebel group for obstructing regional effort to end the conflict and the national dialogue.
Al-Sadiq was referring to the refusal of the rebel group to join peace talks brokered by the African Union High-Level Implementation Panel.
Last week the SLM-AW denied being the imitator of the clashes and accused Washington of seeking to normalize bilateral relations with Khartoum.
The statement of the State Department said that there is no military solution to Sudan’s internal conflicts and urged the Sudanese parties to work with the African Union mediators to end the hostilities and allow humanitarian access to civilians in the war affected areas in Darfur, South Kordofan, and Blue Nile.
In addition, Washington urged Khartoum to implement the confidence building measures necessary to create a conducive environment for the political process.
The violence forced “73,000 people to flee their homes, and thousands more are trapped in the conflict zone of Jebel Marra without access to aid,”. said the statement.
