UNHCR, partners need over $630m to support refugees in Sudan

February 16, 2025 (PORT SUDAN) –The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and 33 international as well as national partners have launched an appeal for $633.7 million to assist nearly 892,000 refugees and asylum-seekers, alongside over 165,000 host community members in war-hit Sudan.
The appeal is considered under the 2025 Sudan Country Response Plan (CRRP).
The plan seeks to meet urgent needs across multiple sectors like protection, education, health, nutrition, food security, livelihoods, WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene), energy, environment, and shelter, which have worsened since a violent conflict broke out in Sudan in mid-April 2023.
It also underscores the need for continued international support and collaboration to sustain life-saving assistance and build resilience for both forcibly displaced people and host communities.
“Sudan is facing one of the world’s most challenging displacement crises. The needs are enormous, and the time to act is now,” said Kristine Hambrouck, UNHCR Representative in Sudan.
“We urge the international community, donors, and humanitarian partners to stand in solidarity with refugees, other forcibly displaced people, and host communities by supporting this plan,” she added.
The response plan highlights the need for collective action from national and international stakeholders to mitigate the devastating impact of the humanitarian crisis and promote self-reliance and durable solutions for refugees and hosting communities.
“Sudan continues to demonstrate remarkable solidarity by hosting refugees despite facing significant challenges. The 2025 CRRP reflects our shared commitment to protecting displaced people while promoting social cohesion and sustainable development,” said Dr. Mohammed Yassin, Sudan’s Commissioner for Refugees.
Since the war erupted in April 2023, over 9 million people have reportedly been displaced within Sudan, including 266,000 refugees who were forced to flee multiple times to safer areas. The increasing needs of refugees, asylum-seekers and host communities require urgent action.
Meanwhile UNHCR and partners have called on the international community to support the 2025 Sudan CRRP, ensuring life-saving assistance and fostering resilience for the most vulnerable.
