Sudan refugee agency to audit staff credentials after hiring reports
June 30, 2025 (PORT SUDAN) – Sudan’s acting head of its refugee commission has ordered a nationwide audit of all employee qualifications following media reports and internal discoveries that staff were hired without proper credentials, an official document showed.
In a letter dated June 24, acting commissioner Mohamed Yassin al-Tohami gave state-level officials one month to conduct a “comprehensive review and administrative inspection” of all staff qualifications.
The letter, obtained by Sudan Tribune, said the review was necessary after confirming that “staff had been appointed without any documentation proving they held academic credentials,” which it called an administrative failure.
The move follows a series of investigative reports by Sudan Tribune, which exposed alleged corruption and hiring irregularities at the commission since the country’s war began in April 2023.
Sources within the commission told the media outlet that a senior official had already been dismissed after an investigation found he held no educational certificates.
Sudan Tribune had previously published official documents allegedly showing that unqualified individuals were appointed to senior roles. One case reportedly involved an executive director who was dismissed and then reinstated as a contractor during the war.
Other irregularities reported by the outlet included the dismissal of employees with advanced degrees, the suspension of staff several years before their legal retirement age, and violations of a government-wide freeze on transfers and promotions. According to the reports, the commission’s personnel director was transferred to her post illegally, in defiance of a Ministry of Labour directive.
The reports alleged the commission has been beset by corruption and violations, including interference in its work by the former interior minister.
