Sudan PM accuses RSF of using hunger as a weapon, urges UN action

July 11, 2025 (PORT SUDAN) – Sudan’s Prime Minister Kamil Idris on Friday accused the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of using hunger as a weapon in the besieged city of El Fasher and called on the United Nations to pressure the group to open humanitarian corridors, state news agency SUNA reported.

In a statement, Idris urged international bodies to fulfil their “moral and legal responsibilities” and warned against silence over what he termed a “major crime committed in plain sight of the world.”

He described the worsening humanitarian catastrophe in the North Darfur capital as “collective blackmail and systematic starvation.”

The RSF has imposed a tight siege on El Fasher, the army’s last major stronghold in the vast Darfur region, worsening conditions for a population that has faced over a year of war and displacement.

The prime minister’s statement said the RSF was the “only party” refusing to implement U.N. Security Council Resolution 2736, which calls for an end to the siege. It added that the Sudanese government, in contrast, had accepted calls for a truce.

Idris called on the international community to move from “lukewarm statements to… serious action and real pressure” on the RSF.
