Sudan’s Arman calls for ceasefire in Kordofan “triangle of death”

January 24, 2026 (KHARTOUM) – Yasir Arman, leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-Revolutionary Democratic Current (SPLM-RDC), has called for a one-week ceasefire in Sudan’s Kordofan region to allow humanitarian aid deliveries and medical evacuations.

Arman urged a halt to fighting in what he described as the “triangle of death” encompassing El Obeid in North Kordofan and Dilling and Kadugli in South Kordofan, where drone strikes and ground clashes have intensified amid a breakdown in security.

In a video posted on Facebook on Friday showing patients suffering at El Obeid Hospital after a three-day power outage, Arman said civilians were paying the price for the warring parties’ military ambitions.

He called for the United Nations to air-drop medicine and food and evacuate critically ill patients from the besieged areas. He questioned the value of military victories achieved at the cost of civilian lives, saying any such win would be “etched onto the graves and coffins of the dead.”

Arman criticized the silence of international mediators, including the African Union, Arab League, United Nations and the Quad Mechanism – comprising the United States, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Egypt.

The Quad proposed a roadmap last September, starting with a three-month humanitarian truce, to be followed by a permanent ceasefire. Sudan’s government rejected the effort and demanded that the UAE be excluded from mediation, accusing it of supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). U.S. envoy Massad Boulos has also called for prioritizing civilian protection in the region.

An alliance including the RSF and SPLM-North is currently besieging parts of South Kordofan, blocking essential supplies from reaching Dilling and Kadugli.
